To achieve this, AfriLabs engaged four AI and research experts, along with one hub member who served as a consultant, offering valuable insights into the intersection of AI, policy, and entrepreneurship. The study covered all 54 African countries, leveraging a mix of detailed desk research and direct stakeholder engagement to build a comprehensive understanding of existing AI policies across the continent. Through extensive data collection efforts, the project conducted over 350 interactions with key stakeholders, ensuring a broad and inclusive approach to gathering insights. The findings were consolidated into a report that detailed existing AI policies, analyzed their potential impact, and provided actionable recommendations for policymakers and innovators alike. Since its release, the report has sparked significant interest, accumulating 14 documented views and 650 downloads. Additionally, it has gained traction across 27 media platforms, highlighting the growing demand for clarity on AI ethics and policy in Africa. This study represents an important milestone in AfriLabs’ ongoing efforts to champion responsible AI development on the continent. By equipping innovators with knowledge and strategic guidance, AfriLabs continues to play a pivotal role in shaping Africa’s AI ecosystem, ensuring that ethical considerations do not hinder the continent’s technological advancement but rather serve as a catalyst for responsible and inclusive growth. Milken-Motsepe Fintech Prize The Milken-Motsepe Innovation Prize Program is a prestigious series of innovation competitions that tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including access to food, energy, housing, education, and financial services. The Milken- Motsepe Prize in FinTech specifically focuses on expanding access to capital and financial services for small businesses in emerging and frontier markets. With a total of $2 million in prizes, including a $1 million grand prize, the initiative supports fintech solutions that drive financial inclusion and economic empowerment. As a key partner, AfriLabs played a crucial role in ensuring the selection of high- quality fintech startups that align with the program’s mission. Through a rigorous and thorough screening process, AfriLabs identified 20 promising fintech startups from a pool of 200 applications received from across Africa. This selection process was guided by a comprehensive screening framework, ensuring that only the most innovative and scalable solutions advanced in the competition. To maintain the highest standards of evaluation, AfriLabs engaged four expert reviewers from its community, leveraging their deep industry expertise to assess and select startups with the greatest potential for impact. By contributing to the Milken-Motsepe Fintech Prize initiative, AfriLabs reaffirms its commitment to supporting Africa’s innovation ecosystem, empowering fintech entrepreneurs, and driving sustainable financial inclusion across the continent.
