Personal desires prevent constructive enterprise and certainly hinder progress. When every man seeks his own profit instead of the profit of others, then there is stagnation and defeat. The Lord expects His people to serve Him “with one shoulder.” He expects His people to work together. He expects united effort as each part of the body works for the good of the whole. No part of the body lives for itself but for the rest of the body. We shall see the work of God grow only as selfishness and selfish in terests are denied. The Lust of the Flesh is a Hindrance 1 John 2:16 The flesh is always the enemy of God’s plans and purposes. “ The flesh lusts against the Spirit” and is not at all subject to or interested in the work which the Spirit wants to do. It is an enemy that cannot be ignored because the flesh is always with us whether we enter a monastery or a cloister or a prayer closet or a pulpit. The flesh remains flesh and never gets converted. There is no help found for the flesh in the Scripture. It must be conquered and ruled by the Holy Spirit. He is the One who makes life constructive and victo rious.

The Lust of the Eyes is a Hindrance 1 John 2:16 Jeremiah said, “ Mine eye affecteth mine heart.” This is a great truth in life. This fact may be used constructively or destructively. Sin is made to appear to the eyes as a very attractive thing but it is always for wicked purposes and evil ends. The things of God may. be made most interesting and attractive if the heart is right with God. The eye sees the success of men who traffic un lawfully and desires gain as they gain. The eye desires personal beauty and seeks to make one’s self an object of attention. The eye engages the soul in temporal blessing all of which hinders the glory of God. The Pride of Life is a Hindrance 1 John 2:16 This expression reveals the wickedness of the human heart and the destructive influence of egotism. The person who seeks to attain ascendancy over his fel lows is doing a destructive work. The one who disparages others in order to exalt himself is a hindrance. One who is so occupied with his own virtues and talents that he exhibits this dis tasteful pride is not occupied with glori fying God and bringing eternal blessing to his fellow men. Filthiness of the Spirit is a Hindrance 2 Cor. 7:1 If the spirit is filled with bitterness against others and envy or malicious ness, the soul will be hindered and pre vented from becoming useful in the serv ice of God. Those who harbor revenge cannot be building up blessing for others. Those who are critical and fault finding are so busy at that business that they have little time for doing good to those who are in need. A haughty spirit is an offense to those who T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S
