get men to turn their attention from it. He gets them to thinking that there is something that they must do in order to attain salvation. And he has been succeeding all too well down through the centuries. He has prevailed upon some to believe that they must be baptized in order to be saved. Faith in Christ, yes, but baptism in addition. He has suc ceeded in getting others to believe that partaking of the Communion service has a part in bringing salvation to them. In other cases the devil has influenced men to believe that joining the church is man’s part in his salvation. If men could only realize that to add anything to the finished work of Christ at Calvary is to cheapen the efficacy of our Lord’s sacri fice. The things we have mentioned as ad ditions to God’s plan of salvation are very important matters and are to be observed, not in order to possess salvation but rather in consequence of it. In their doctrinal difficulty, the church at An tioch consulted the leaders at Jerusalem and were rewarded with a satisfying an swer, namely, that salvation is by grace alone through faith plus nothing. Then following salvation there should be a life of separation (v. 29). Good Will in Action Again 2 Cor. 9:1-5 The Apostle Paul is anxious that they of Achaia (Corinth) shall make good their promise of the previous year (v. 2) to do something generous for the poor saints of Jerusalem. He did not want them to miss the joy of helping those in need and of showing in a very practical way their good will. “ Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to re ceive” (Acts 20:35). The Christians who were scattered to various cities and lands because of their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ boldly witnessed for their Lord. Some of them came to the town of Antioch and led a great number of the people to the Sa viour. The church at Jerusalem heard of the Antioch Christians and sent one of their members, Barnabas, to visit these new Christians. Barnabas rejoiced with the Antioch Christians over God’s good ness to them and went to bring the great missionary, Paul, back to Antioch to preach the gospel. For a whole year Paul and Barnabas stayed at Antioch and preached. It was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians. A teacher from Jerusalem came to Antioch and told of a great time of need that was coming soon. Eagerly the Antioch Christians gave as much as they could to bring relief to their brethren in Helps for the Children Churches Work Together Acts 11:22-30; 15:22, 23 Memory Verse: “The same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him” (Romans 10:12b).
