Help track the rare eel Anyone who has seen an American Eel in these parts lately is a member of an elite group. Once plentiful in the South Nation watershed and throughout this part of the province, it’s estimated the eel population has declined by more than 90 per cent. In cooperation with various partners, the South Nation Conservation agency has been tracking eels since 2009. “Anglers have important information about where they used to see and catch eels,”said Naomi Langlois-Anderson, SNC Senior Fish andWildlife Technician. People with eel stories are asked to contact her at 877-984-2948, extension 250, or nlan- glois-anderson@nation.on.ca. The reasons for the decline in the eel population are numerous, added Langlois-Ander- son, who is collecting anecdotal information about the species. They include man-made dams and weirs, over-fishing, pollution and parasites. The snake-like, brown-to-tan coloured eels with small pointed heads have traditionally been a staple in the diets of native North Americans. In a remarkable natural phenom- enon, hatchlings swim 6,000 kilometres from the Sargasso Sea to reach freshwater desti- nations where they feed and mature before returning to the sea to spawn 10 to 30 years later. They’re a protected species in Ontario. “Except for First Nations, few anglers actually sought out eels,” Langlois-Anderson observed. “They were seen as a nuisance. Some people have no shoes to wear, others have no clean water to drink and here in Canada some people have shoes they no longer intend to wear. How can all this be connected? George “The Shoeman” Hutchings from St. Louis, Missouri is coming to this area April 11 when he will pick up used shoes. He will then sell them to distributors who supply street vendors in South America and Africa with shoes that people with no shoes can buy for pennies on the dollar. Monies received from the sale of shoes are used to drill wells, and sup- ply pumps and water purification sys- tems in Haiti and Kenya, relates Wayne Clark, Executive Director of the Fellow- ship of Christian Farmers of Canada. Others get shoes to wear at a price they can afford, and donors have less clutter in closets and there are fewer shoes in landfills. “By doing so, we demonstrate in a small way that we care,”says Clark, aGrenville resident.“I have been to Africa and have seen women car- rying 20 litres of water (and not necessarily clean) on their heads over five kilometres.” People with shoes they no longer wear are asked to tie them together in pairs and bring them to a collection point, or start a collection point of their own.
