Elasticity, the ability to retract, thickness, color, and non-aller- genic are relevant features to consider when choosing the most appropriate material.

CLINICAL SITUATION

Gingival Status Athrophic or hypertrophic gingiva, i.e. thin, soft, dry, or inflamma- tory conditions. Dental dam retration should not put too much stress on mucuosa and gingiva. • Choose a more flexible and thinner dental dam with less retraction which will ease any stress on the gingiva.

Tooth Condition Tooth may be decayed and enhanced retraction is needed due to missing height of contour.

• Choose HySolate Latex Dental Dam. Thicker dental dam allows for better retraction for a tight fit around the isolated area.

PATIENT DISPOSITION

Allergy Patient and/or staff may have allergic reactions to the proteins in latex • Choose a non-latex dental dam to avoid allergic reactions to latex proteins.

Anxiety/Pain Sensitivity Patient has anxiety or claustrophobia and rejects the application of dental dam • Choose a non-latex dental dam to avoid allergic reactions to latex proteins. • Choose HySolate Flexi Dam with built-in flexible frame for less stress on the patient.

CLINICAL PROCEDURES

Restoration For aesthetic results, higher contrast is required.

Endodontics Endodontic procedures may use aggressive substances like NaOCl. Dental dam material needs to be resistant upon contact. • Choose HySolate Latex Dental Dam as it affords the highest resistance to contact of foreign substances.

• Choose a darker dental dam to reduce eye fatigue and provide a good contrast to the working area.

PATIENT AGE

Child First time application, possible fear and anxiety. Small(er) jaw • Use a light and pleasant color for a calming effect. • Choose 5" x 5" (127 x 127 mm) dental dam for smaller patients.

Young Adult Gingivia is firm(er)

Older Adult Gingivia tends to be thinner, softer and drier. Mucosa is more vernerable and susceptible to mechanical stimulus. Dispostion for latex allergy can be elevated due to age. • Choose a more flexible and thinner dental dam with less retraction which will ease any stress on the gingiva. • Choose a non-latex dental dam to avoid allergic reactions to latex proteins.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS › Cut out the dental dam sheet so that nose breathing is possible.

› Put Parotisroll on the upper lip to create space between nose and the dental dam sheet.

› Use Dental Dam Napkins to ease the contact of the dental dam material with the skin.

Flexi Dam Non-Latex performs with high elasticity while tension is moderate. It is ideal for softer retraction. Dental Dam Non-Latex is not as elastic as Flexi Dam while showing higher tension. Retraction forces on the gingiva are higher. It is the latex free alternative to latex when seeking strong retraction. Dental Dam Latex provides the best possible retraction

Clamps Dental dam fit partly depends on how it is secured to the teeth. COLTENE makes fixation simple with both wingless and winged clamps. Winged clamps have projections at the jaws while wingless do not. Our aim is to accommodate application techniques with any dentist‘s style. Our dental dam clamps are manufactured from high quality stainless steel for greater durability.

Wingless clamps are positioned intra-orally first and then the dam is stretched over the clamp and tooth. Our wingless clamps are designated with a W for easy identification.

Winged clamps combine steps by placing the dam, clamp and frame simultaneously. Once applied, the dam is stretched off the wings of the clamp.

Four-Point Contact Select a clamp that will maintain four-point contact with the tooth’s proximal surfaces. The clamp is positioned with the bow on the distal of the tooth. Universal clamps can be used on the left and the right side of both the upper and the lower jaw. Both clamp jaws are equal.
