Welcome

Welcome to the Smith Gardens 2023 Trial Program! We are excited to have you!

A LITTLE BACKGROUND: The trial gardens were estabished in 2013 and consist of 22-6’x51’ raised beds, 10 hanging basket racks and 1/4 acre of container ready field space. It has been designed to gradually expand over time and currently holds the capacity to trial over 2,500 varieties. The gardens are located at our Marysville, WA facility, and is the heart of the operations, meaning, it is located directly in the middle of our greenhouses in a large open space. The area is well protected and creates the perfect Pacific Northwest environment for trialing. We also offer three different programs: - PAID IN TRIALS : Varieties are featured at our annual new product showcase in a landscape (in-bed) growing environment. -BREEDER TRIALS: Specific to what the breeders request to be trialed. Data tracked will be tailored to the breeder requests. -SGI RETAIL TRIAL REPORTING: Smith Gardens chosen varieties are trialed and priced based on variety. Timed data collection executed from time of planting to finish date. Progression photos along with multiple growth data points are documented for the breeder. We utilize Mercado as our tracking program. It allows us to accurately track a wide variety of traits and growth throughout the trial period. The information processed is thorough and covers finite details of the plants life in the gardens.

PAID IN TRIALS With our PAID IN TRIALS program breeders are allowed the opportunity to participate in our annual New Product Showcase, taking place at the trial gardens in July of 2023. Varieties are hand selected by the breeder and method of trials (in-bed, hanging basket, planter, or 1GL) is determined by the breeder as well. One of the biggest benefits of the paid in trials program is the exposure the varieties will receive. Local growers, retailers, brokers, and customers regulary walk the trials to see the magnificent display each year and get inspired of what to add to their upcoming year’s lineup. Paid in trials offers the viewer an opportunity to witness the plants at peak performance and see first hand the longevity they will have for the consumer. RETAIL TRIALS

RETAIL TRIALS focus on varieties already available in the market. The breeder has an opportunity to choose which products to focus on, with the guidance of the trial’s team upon request.

6 Said varieties are then tracked throughout production and reports are taken along the way. Data includes crop timing, progression photos, performance reviews, growth details, and any other specified data as discussed with the trials director. The final report will allow an overall view of how each variety performed in its chosen production season in the Pacific Northwest. Finalized data is compiled and shared with customers, sales, and production teams and is utilized in future planning. It is an excellent method of “Real Life” trialing.
