The Maharashtra Drought: Telling the Untold Stories

We spoke with farmers who told us about the men in their village who took their own lives when their crops failed and they couldn’t pay back their loans. We met climate refugees - people who left their farms in rural areas to rent cramped rooms in the city and find work in factories. And we met those who were left behind. We travelled to one farming village, where the only people who were still there were the elderly. Anyone who was physically able to work had migrated to the cities in search of it, breaking up the extended family. We didn’t see any other international news teams on our travels in Maharashtra. During our week of filming, hearing people describe what they had to go through just to get water, the most basic of life’s necessities, I felt deeply privileged to work for a news network which sends teams to the most remote of locations to find out how big issues such as climate change are affecting people. Caring about the untold stories is so much more than a slogan for Al Jazeera. It is what the network does, and it does it better than anyone else.
