Agony in Guantanamo’s Darkest Cell
Regular blood samples were taken with the same force. It was yet another way of torturing me. I was detained in Guantanamo for more than six years without trial, simply for covering the war in Afghanistan as part of Al Jazeera’s team. From the very first day I was detained, Al Jazeera, from the top management down to my fellow journalists, never abandoned me. They left no stone unturned in trying to support my cause. My journey of pain and suffering inspired decision- makers at Al Jazeera to expand the human rights desk into an independent department. Steeped in the belief that strong and vocal media can advance the cause of basic human rights, Al Jazeera later established the Public Liberties and Human Rights Centre. As I recall all the pain I have been through, I find solace every day I get up and drive to work, to the Public Liberties and Human Rights Centre, which I now chair.
