Technical Operations, the Network’s Beating Heart
Another milestone in my career was when I led the technical team responsible for setting up a full-fledged operational studio in northwest Africa, meant for the daily Maghreb News Bulletin. I could see the joy in people’s eyes as they welcomed Al Jazeera into their homeland. On the other hand, we faced a huge challenge when our studios in Doha came to a standstill following unprecedented floods. We immediately put into effect the contingency plan. A similar situation came along with the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. We set up substitute studios in two other facilities in anticipation of any emergency within the currently operating newsrooms.
Field reporting always introduces unforeseen challenges. I remember when I was tasked with the Pilgrimage (Hajj) in Saudi Arabia. A new advanced editing system was imported; and I attended an intensive course one day before our departure. Needless to say, operating in an over-packed environment is full of challenges. I am proud to be part of Al Jazeera, the great media organisation that is boldly telling the truth and giving voice to the voiceless. As we celebrate our silver jubilee, we are all adamant that we will continue marching on this course.
