cordance in that they are not neces sarily geared to Biblical words, but rather to ideas. The subdivisions are not always in alphabetical order, and with a l a r g e subject like “Jesus Christ,” one needs to look through the whole section to find everything. It provides a good access to the teachings of the Bible, as well as isolated facts. 681 pages; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids; $5.95. History of Interpretation by Frederic W . Farrar This is a reissue of the 1886 edi tion of a classic work in the her meneutical method from the ancient rabbinic to the nineteenth century. Since it constituted the 1885 Bamp- ton lectures, it represents a most ex haustive treatment of the subject up to that time. A chronology of authors important in the development of in terpretation is given in the front of the book, and voluminous material in the back includes notes, biblio graphies, and indexes. The author, after a long and distinguished career of teaching, became Dean of Canter bury in 1895. He is well known for his Life of Christ, Life and Work of St. Paul, and The Witness of History to Christ, li, 553 pages; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids; $6.95. Proclaiming the New Testament by Herschel H. Hobbs and others With the Matthew volume Baker Book House inaugurates a new series of commentaries for the preacher. They are in effect expositions. The various writers will come from a v a r i e t y of denominational back grounds. Hobbs is a Baptist; Ralph Earle, a Nazarene, writes Mark; and Ralph G. Turnbull, a Presbyterian, writes The Acts. There is a five-fold pattern in each book: I, Historical setting; II, Expository meaning; III, Doctrinal value; IV, Practical aim; and V, Homiletical form. While brief, the work is not shallow, but comes right to the point. The set will con sist of fifteen volumes in all. Baker Book House, Grand Rapids; $2.50, $2.50 and $2.75. Recommended, books are available from the Biola Book Rooms, 5 60 South Hope Street, Los Angeles; 121 West Wilson Glendale; and on the La Mirada Campus. Handy meal order service is also available. Free descriptive books and record catalogs will be sent upon request.

Commentary on the Whole Bible by Matthew Henry What might look on the surface like an insurmountable task, seems to have been successfully accomplished. The task was performed by Dr. Leslie F. Church, distinguished British edi tor connected with Epworth Press. His method was to condense only by deleting. No phrases have b e e n changed, except in the interest of accuracy, which more modem knowl edge has provided. It is felt that mat- thew Henry would have wanted it that way. No phrasing has been changed otherwise. In reducing the six volumes of the original to one, the proportion does not hold because this is a large volume of almost 2,000 pages, while the original six ran a little over 4,000. There need be no hesitation now on account of price for any pastor to be without this greatest of expository commentaries, xi, 1204, 784 pages; cloth; Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids; $9.25. With a background of over 51 years in the ministry, this veteran Bible teacher and theologian has taken themes of the Bible to bring out important doctrinal truths. Sub jects include: The Curse, the Christ, Calvary, Constraint, Complement, Contemporary, Consumation a n d Confirmation. Actually the volume is especially designed to bring light to those who know not the Saviour as well as to strengthen the hearts of believers. 120 pages; cloth; Zonder van Publishing House, Grand Rapids, Michigan; $1.95. Monser's Topical Index and Digest This is neither a dictionary nor a concordance, although it has some features of each. It is a reissue of the 1914 edition entitled Cross-Reference Digest of Rible References, with some additional material, chiefly outlines of the books of the Bible. The bulk of the material is from the footnotes of the Monser Cross-Reference Bible. The material is in dictionary form, that is, in alphabetical order by sub ject, and under the heading will be found one or more references. In many cases the broad subjects are broken down into subdivisions. The headings differ from those in the con- Beds of Pearls by Robert G. Lee
