THE CHR IST IAN HOME (Cont.) rather its fulfillment and enrichment. When we stress the equality of hus bands and wives, we are only seeing half the picture. As responsible part ners, each must share and divide the duties and privileges equally, but, on the other hand, marriage is more than one relationship. We are partners, but we are also lovers. To have a good marriage, husbands and wives must develop both of these relationships. In the relationship between two lovers, the concept of equality is absurd. The last thing they want is to be equal and alike. The principle that gives them joy is the Divine gift of being uniquely different, so that they each can give what the other lacks. Love does not assert the rights of the indi vidual, but thrives on giving and re ceiving. So much emphasis has been placed in our present American society on the equality of men and women that the differences between their natures and personalities is often forgotten. Men and women work at the same voca tions, play the same sports, do the same housework, and share the civic duties and community affairs, arid we imagine that we have achieved some thing great. As persons, this equality is splendid. As marriage partners, it is often bewildering. Couples enter marriage, thinking that they really understand each other, because they cheered for the same football team, talked the same language, and shared the same juvenile interests. Frequently these same persons refuse to accept the differences between their personali ties. The husband treats his wife like another man and is dismayed when she fails to respond. The wife expects her husband to feel about things as she does and is hurt when he lacks real understanding and sensitiveness. A stalemate ensues, in which each disillusioned partner bitterly blames the other. The couple finds itself fight ing about the very thing that is the source of joy to the couple who rec ognizes and accepts the basic differ ences between their natures. The best in marriage is developed when married people determine to understand, to accept, and to appreci ate as God’s gifts, the feminine and masculine differences, the basic needs that arise from these differences, and the capacities to meet those needs with these differences. Then the hus band can be to his wife what she in telligently expects a man to be and the wife can be to him what he un derstands a woman to be. A very wise God planned it this way. Disaster fol lows when men and women place sameness ahead of uniqueness.
