FINDING GRATITUDE IN HARD TIMES The Season of Thanksgiving
It’s often said that “the struggle ends where the gratitude begins.” And gosh, how true this is! This Thanksgiving, it is important to reflect often on where we have been and where we are now. Most of us are never quite where we want to be. We are growing humans and constantly evolving. Even when it seems like we have it all together, people still crave more, and that’s so important for our personal development. Here at New Frontier Immigration Law, we want our clients to be goal-oriented and desire more out of life — there is so much to yearn for and achieve. Those who are content with their lives don’t need to come to us for assistance. If you don’t want to make a change in your life, we may not be the best fit for you. We aren’t here to throw money at a problem; our goal is to help those with the desire for more to make meaningful changes in their lives. By being appreciative of where we are now and where we started, we can be grateful for where we are headed. If you are sitting in our office today, making a change, you must be grateful for the person six months ago who initiated that change. Life can be tough, and it throws us curveballs. But not all obstacles are bad, and it is important to be grateful for our
challenges. Recently, Alma, a client of New Frontier Immigration Law, got pulled over for speeding and was issued a ticket. She has been in the United States for 20 years now and the entire time, she was eligible for a green card, but due to finances and life’s responsibilities, she was unable to get one. They took her to the detention center where we met her, and we were able to take her to immigration court, where the judge granted her a green card. From that day forward, she has been a lawful permanent resident. If we take a moment to reflect, if she hadn’t been pulled over and if the cop was not an aggressive enforcer of the law, things would not have worked out to her benefit as they had. While, at the time, it seemed like a terrible situation, looking back, Alma is so grateful because without this experience, she would not have changed. The pandemic has recently been extremely challenging for the nation as a whole. Individuals and businesses alike have experienced some significant struggles and changes, but there is a way for us to be grateful for those challenges, too. It has forced many of us to take a challenge and determine how we can creatively and innovatively solve the problem in a way that truly touches on the heart of what the issue is — compared to what we think the issue is.
Without that painful experience of feeling like the whole world was falling out from underneath us, we wouldn’t really appreciate the new blessings in the aftermath. Recently, I attended a conference with a coworker, Maria, and being back out in the world again had us feeling like little girls at camp. We flew on an airplane and stayed in a hotel — things we had come to take for granted a bit. We would not have appreciated that so much if we hadn’t been in a position where it had all been taken away. Here at New Frontier Immigration Law, we want our clients to be goal-oriented and desire more out of life — there is so much to yearn for and achieve.”
There is opportunity in challenging situations. If you’re in a position where you are hungry for more and ready to make a change, we are here to help! Gratitude is where it all begins.

We are ecstatic to welcome our new associate attorney, Angie Velez, to the firm! Angie fits right in and brings so much knowledge, passion, and determination to the team. She has been with New Frontier Immigration Law for about three months now, and her focus is primarily on removal defense. Angie assists in both prepping and attending USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services). “If clients are adjusting here in the U.S., I help them prepare for the interview once everything has been filed, and I then attend it with them,” Angie explains. “It’s one of many ways that we help our clients.” “I am recently licensed and was looking for a firm that would be a good fit. New Frontier Immigration Law is right by my boy’s school, and I saw it under construction. Upon doing research, I couldn’t help but to think it was the perfect firm,” Angie tells us. “As soon as I saw a job opening, I applied.” Angie is thrilled to be helping us change our clients’ lives and has already made a difference for our clients. We are lucky to have found such talent. “Hillary took a huge chance on me and gave me an opportunity to grow. For that, I’m forever grateful and ready to make a positive impact on each client,” Angie states. For Angie, her work is all about making differences in the lives of others. While an intern in law school, Angie’s work assisted many to overcome some great feats. Her very own story relates to those of many of our clients. At a young age, she was on the verge of being deported and was in removal. Upon hiring an attorney, her life was forever changed, and that’s where her passion for her career began. When Angie isn’t working, she is spending time with her kids, who are No. 1 in her life. Whether they are going on hikes, long walks, or bike rides, she cherishes every moment and enjoys all that motherhood has to offer. Welcome to the Firm, Angie!
OVERCOMING THE IMPOSSIBLE TASK IMPROVING YOUR MENTAL HEALTH ONE STEP AT A TIME Almost everyone at some point has encountered a task that is seemingly simple, but no matter what they do, they can’t complete it. These tasks can be as straightforward as making the bed or something bigger, like cleaning an entire room. For many, this is an obstacle that they may want to do but can’t, which weighs heavily on them and becomes detrimental to their mental health. It’s important to understand that the impossible task is not a sign of laziness; depression and anxiety can make any task feel much bigger and more difficult than it actually is. If you find yourself unable to do the things you need or want to do, try these techniques to help overcome your obstacles. BREAK UP THE TASK. When the overarching task feels daunting, breaking it up into smaller segments can help you manage it. If you’re cleaning the kitchen, clean for only a few minutes at a time before taking a break. It might take longer, but the space will be clean at the end of the day. MAKE THE TASK MORE ENJOYABLE. Play music or involve your pet in some way to make the task fun or create a reward system for yourself. For example, tidying a specific area of the house or folding a basket of laundry may earn you time to play video games or watch TV. Alternating tasks and rewards is a great way to overcome any task, big or small. It can help to consider why the task feels so impossible, especially if you used to enjoy it. Try to remember what made it enjoyable and see if you can return to that state of mind. If the objective is not so urgent, determine its importance and if the task can be saved for another day. When all else fails, you can always ask someone for support or even pay someone else to do the task for you. No matter what you decide, there are ways to defeat the impossible task.
Angie, we are grateful to have you on board!

The Benefits of PositiveRelationships GOOD FOR MIND AND HEALTH
BOOSTED IMMUNE SYSTEMS It makes sense — people who have less stress have stronger immune systems. During times of high stress, our bodies are more susceptible to illnesses because our immune system’s ability to fight off antigens is reduced. The stress hormone corticosteroid can also lower the number of lymphocytes available to fight infection. However, when we are in a happy and loving relationship, our bodies produce oxytocin, and we are less likely to get sick. BETTER PHYSICAL SHAPE Being in a positive relationship, especially a romantic one, can provide the motivation to be the best version of ourselves. This includes our physical condition, too! Having a friend or workout partner to encourage accountability and even push us out of our comfort zone a bit at the gym can keep us motivated. Being in a positive, healthy, and happy relationship means we listen to each other, offer advice, openly communicate without judgment, practice respect and trust, and engage in healthy activities together. So, it’s no surprise that positive relationships work wonders for our health and happiness.
Connecting with other humans in a positive way is one of the most profound experiences we have. That positivity is one of the greatest virtues — it’s contagious, and engaging in happy relationships with others is extremely important not only for our minds but also for our health. LONGER LIVES Studies have actually shown that when people are involved in positive relationships, they live longer. This is likely attributed to decreased stress, as stress can exact a toll on the entire body. Positive relationships can also encourage us to give up negative habits such as drinking or smoking, which cause many health problems and concerns. Healthy habits can help people live longer lives. QUICKER HEALING Positive people in our lives can distract us from pain, remind us to take medication, be our advocates, and simply reduce stress. And less stress means healing takes place faster. Those who have a support person feel more confident and prepared to undergo surgeries and fight illnesses as well.

Comparison Shop Like a Champ This Holiday Season
During the Holiday Season COMPARISON SHOP LIKE A CHAMP
The holiday season can be expensive. Sure, you might describe this time of year with less cynical words like “magical” or “warm,” but unfortunately, most stores don’t accept magic or warmth as legal tender. Whether it be for gifts or for holiday meals and treats, most people want to get the most for their money while saving their time and energy. That’s what makes comparison shopping in the age of technology so worthwhile. In case you didn’t already guess its meaning, “comparison shopping” is simply when you compare prices of the same or similar products at different stores or online retailers. You’ve probably done comparison shopping without knowing you were doing it. However, once you truly embrace the concept, you can increase your savings. Plus, by using the bevy of online price comparison tools,
you can do so without scrambling around to every store in town. If you want to comparison shop like a champ this holiday season, here are a few general tips. THE BEST DEAL ISN’T ALWAYS THE LOWEST PRICE. If you’re buying gifts online, be sure to take shipping costs into account. They might end up making the cheaper option more expensive in the end. You should also take a look at the return fees, in case these could drive the price up significantly. LOOKATTHE PER UNIT PRICE FOR FOOD. If you’re buying groceries for Thanksgiving dinner, sometimes the item that’s more expensive at face value is actually cheaper per unit. That can mean you’ll save money overall by buying in bulk.
BEWARYOFMARKUPS. Black Friday can leave you feeling frenzied, and that’s not always when stores have their best deals. In fact, many of them mark up their prices (sometimes “discounting” them back to their regular price) in preparation for that day. It’s a good rule of thumb to be wary of massive “sales” at big retail locations. If you want to knowwhere you can compare prices, take a look at any one of these apps: Google Shopping, PriceGrabber, Shopping.com, Idealo, Shopzilla, BuyVia, NowDiscount, ScanLife, or ShopSavvy.
