“Something I found really interesting was that the beautiful synagogue in Christchurch has different services for the Orthodox and Reformist groups, which shows how there are different interpretations about the religion. Each service revolves around a reading of the Torah, which is kept in a special cupboard at the front. The Torah is written in Hebrew on a parchment of goat’s skin and in order to use it, you have to use a special metal pointer so as not to damage the book. In some ways, this was very different to the way that we conduct services at Christ’s College, but I could see some similarities, too, and it was interesting to see how Anglicanism and Judaism are related.”

Learning about the diversity and history of the Jews, and their contribution to society prompted him to do further research, including speaking with Jewish friends. “I think that gaining an understanding of groups that have made New Zealand what it is today is a crucial step in enhancing our global competency and celebrating diversity.”
