PREVIEW Online Youth Mental Health Champion workbook

Lesson 6: Steps to wellbeing cont.

Discussion The final discussion is an open question and answer session to clear up any misunderstandings and clarify any outstanding points that have arisen during the sessions. Pupils have learned about how listening is very supportive and also how to ask for help themselves when they need it. Hopefully they will have received some positive messages about recovery from mental health conditions and that there is no need to be frightened of mental ill health. They will have challenged stigma and discrimination and feel they have much greater knowledge and understanding of quite a complex subject. To end the session on a high note, set pupils the activity of a Happiness Hour homework. This is a way of practising the wellbeing strategies pupils have just learned and also highlights the importance of self- care when supporting another person. Ask pupils to put aside an hour in the day to do something that makes them happy and that they feel improves their wellbeing. Highlight that we should try and find at least an hour a week to do an activity like this that balances out our stresses. Explain that doing so not only improves their mental health but helps make them more resilient to the stress of supporting someone else when they are going through a difficult time. In this way, looking after our own wellbeing is a win-win. Finally, pupils are asked to complete the evaluation forms.
