The savage agony and intense passion of a man stretched to the breaking point. First time offered in paperback. This is the story of a man’s unfailing courage and enduring faith in the face of certain death. Pastor This reprint deals with the question of how a person may know he has a true and saving interest in Christ and also how he may be saved. The author, minister of a church in Scotland (1650-1644), put into this book the central essence of his teach ing as a pastor. Guthrie explains ways a per son is p r e p a r e d for receiving Christ. He saturates the book with verses, using most of them well, but some out of context. He is helpfully perceptive in show ing types of thought in a man be fore he looks only to Christ for salvation. One especially good chapter deals with evidences that one is really saved. Another traces differences between a genu ine Christian and a mere profes sor, whom Guthrie calls a hypo crite. Then he is profitable in giv ing reasons why some doubt their salvation and in answering these, as well as in answering objections and difficulties men have about coming to Christ. — 207 pp; pa per; The Banner of Truth Trust; 5s.
