acter and behavior corresponding to sound doc­ trine. However, our stress here is on the special exhortation to slaves, emphasizing that on the darkest background, the grace of God shines brightest. The Apostle urged “ Exhort servants — bondmen— that they may adorn the doctrine o f our Saviour God in all things.” This spiritual adorn­ ment is spelled out in practical Christian behavior (see verses 9 and 10). Hence, in the area of human hopelessness, the transforming power of God makes possible a vital godliness as the adornment o f the doctrine of God our Saviour. Our Scripture for consideration is “ that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” (Titus 2:10). How can it be possible for sinners to adorn the doctrine of the holy God ? The answer is that such sinners are saved by the grace of God and it is on the ground of God’s free and unmerited favor that the divine purpose is accom­ plished in human lives. Paul’s exhortation to Titus was: “ But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine” (2 :1). In this chapter the emphasis is on the char-
