for us” ; “By His death He began that work which after His resur rection He ascended to complete in Heaven” ; “ Jesus stands before the Father continually offering a sacrifice for the sin of the world” ; “We are in that great day of atonement.” This is a complete denial of Hebrews 7 :25: “When He had by Himself purged our sins, He sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.” On the cross Jesus cried: “ It is finished!” be cause His atonement was com pleted. He sat down after His ascension because there was no further redemptive work for Him to do. The Sabbath and Other Heresies Dr. J. B. Rowell wrote: “ It is not likely that many Seventh-day Adventists know all the steps in the strange development of Sev enth-day Adventist doctrine, nor how many confessed mistakes in the interpretation of Scripture were made. . . . It was their un- scriptural teaching regarding the heavenly sanctuary, and Satan be ing the sin-bearer, which led to the emphasis on the Sabbath. I quoted directly from The Great Controversy, ‘In the very bosom of the decalogue is the fourth commandment . . . Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. . . . None could fail to see that if the earthly sanctuary was a figure or pattern o f the heavenly, the Law deposited in the ark on earth was an exact transcript of the Law in the ark in heaven: and that an acceptance of the truth concern ing the heavenly sanctuary in volved an acknowledgment of the claims of God’s law. . . . The work of judgment which began in 1844 must continue until all cases are decided. In order to be prepared for judgment, it is necessary that men should keep the law of God” (pp. 435, 436).” In addition to these heresies, Seventh-day Ad v e n t i sm denies the Bible teaching o f an everlast ing hell for those who by-pass Calvary; it teaches annihiliation of the wicked; it teaches the sleep
of the soul and spirit in the grave until the resurrection. However, its favorite theory is that o f the Jewish sabbath, which is called “ the test and seal of God” and consequent rejection of the ob servance of the Christian first day of the week in honor o f Christ’s resurrection, called by this cult “the mark of the beast.” SDA Uriah Smith stated that the world was divided into two classes, those who kept the sabbath and those who did not. But God’s Word has a different classifica tion: the saved and the lost, de pending upon whether or not one has received by faith alone the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour. D R . H A R L I N J .
