A REVITALIZED SMILE IS REVITALIZED CONFIDENCE Finding Empowerment in a Smile

In my 31 years of practicing dentistry, I’ve noticed one word that often comes up in conversations: Confidence. Technology and treatments continue to improve; but ultimately, the goal remains the same. People want to feel confident and empowered with a revitalized smile. However, over the last 10 years, I’ve noticed a new emerging trend. I’ve had many conversations with patients about the topic of confidence, or more precisely, the lack of it. Patients tell me they hate their smile and dread being photographed. They say they are afraid to smile because they don’t like the look of their teeth. Compounding problems, they feel just as terrible for not smiling. This is damaging to their self- esteem and it erodes their confidence. But why has this become more common over the past 10 years? The answer is social media. People are posting pictures to Facebook, Instagram, and many other social media platforms. They put themselves out there for all the world to see, smiles and all. With our lives on social media, it can be challenging to hide a smile you don’t love. For some people, it becomes a source of anxiety. However, there’s hope. More and more people are realizing they can do something about it. A renewed smile is just around the corner. When a patient mentions to me that they don’t like their smile, I make it a conversation. We talk about the ways we can improve their smile, and I ask them specifically what they dislike about it. Sometimes, it is the color of their teeth — the teeth are stained, yellowed, or discolored. Other times, their concern is crooked or misaligned teeth. Occasionally, a patient doesn’t know exactly what they dislike about their teeth. They simply know that something is off. And no matter the situation, they know they want to correct the issue. From there, we may decide on a teeth-whitening plan or we may go beyond that and opt for veneers. It all depends on the individual’s needs and desires.

Once we take the next step, I start to see the transformation. It’s a transformation in attitude, demeanor, and confidence. As treatment concludes, I often hear how surprised a patient is to see their new smile. They remark that they have never seen themselves this way before. It is truly remarkable. I have had many conversations with patients a year or more after treatment. They tell me the impact their new smile has had on their lives. I hear comments like, “I landed a much better job!” or, “I’ve met so many new people!” They feel more outgoing and look forward to being photographed and being in social situations. They feel empowered. Self-esteem is an important issue, and it’s not always discussed as openly as it should be. It’s unfortunate that many people settle for smiles they don’t love. Nonetheless, I’m happy to be of service to those who desire a revitalized smile and improved confidence.

How to Find a Reliable Babysitter Narrow the Field and Find the Perfect Fit

Date night is good for the whole family, and the University of Lincoln found that, even when all other factors are removed, couples who regularly go out together are more likely to stay together. But child care is a full-time job, and it doesn’t leave much room for romantic moonlit strolls. Having a great babysitter will free up your schedule for some much-needed couple time. But how do you find a sitter you can trust? These tips and resources will help you find a sitter your whole family will feel comfortable with. Seek Out Personal Recommendations When you’re looking for a high-trust service like babysitting, it’s often best to ask friends and family for recommendations. This is especially true if you know people whose children are a similar age as your own. Be sure to ask questions about the referrals you receive and make sure your potential sitter will be a good fit for your family’s needs. Turn to Trusted Local Organizations Colleges, neighborhoods, and places of worship often maintain lists of reliable sitters within the community. Asking members of these groups for testimonials will help you gauge a candidate’s professionalism. Kindergartens and day care centers are another great local resource to turn to. Often, teachers and assistants will moonlight as sitters, bringing with them a host of child care skills. Surf the Web There are great web-based resources for finding babysitters. Make sure the sites you visit are properly accredited and have plenty of good reviews. Most national sites do a full background check on all

of their listed sitters. These almost always charge a membership fee, but many parents feel that added layer of security is worth it. Conduct Interviews Ultimately, the only way you can know if a candidate is the right babysitter for you is to meet them yourself. Make sure the whole family is present; you’ll want to pay attention to how your potential sitter interacts with your kids during the interview. Ask questions specific to your family’s needs and keep the needs of the sitter in mind, as well. Finding a babysitter who can give you and your partner peace of mind is essential. Thankfully, there’s a wealth of local and web-based resources you can pull from. With a little inquiring, you’ll be able to leave home knowing your children are in great hands.

What Makes a Cosmetic Practice Special? The Difference Between General and Cosmetic Dentistry

At our practice, we believe all great care is the result of open communication between our patients and our team. We are always willing to answer any questions a patient has about a procedure, our office, or our staff. Not only does this build a real connection, it also demystifies the complicated work we do, putting patients at ease. Over the years, we’ve answered more questions than we can count, but one comes up more than any other: What makes cosmetic dentistry special? The best way we can answer is to say that cosmetic dentistry is everything you’d get from a general dentist, plus a specialization in cosmetic and functional enhancement. A general dentist focuses on prevention, education, and treating conditions like decay and gum disease. They usually handle the primary care for individual and families.

associate the cosmetic with the superficial, but that’s certainly not the case when it comes to your teeth. Improving factors like alignment and restoration provide a foundation for better oral health. Your smile looking its best is important. However, it’s just as essential that you have the foundation for long- term oral health. To achieve this goal, we specialize in a number of procedures including veneers, dental implants, porcelain crowns, and teeth straightening. In addition to these cosmetic services, we offer all the routine procedures you’d find at a general dentist. We pride ourselves on being an exceptional cosmetic dentistry practice. We can’t do that, though, without the building blocks of general dentistry. So what is cosmetic dentistry? It’s everything you’d find at a great general dentistry practice, plus a bit more.

The focus of cosmetic dentistry is, as the name implies, ensuring your teeth look and feel their best. Too often, we

The Most Romantic Destinations on Earth

Valentine’s Getaways

THE BEST

TO FANTASIZE ABOUT of this seaside town, taking in the century-old multicolored Italian architecture perched precariously on the verdant mountainside. Too small to accommodate swarms of tourists, it’s the perfect place to while away the hours ambling from shop to shop, sampling the delicious local cuisine, and maybe taking a dip along the 300-meter beach. The Maldives From a water villa smack dab in the midst of the glassy, ultra-blue Indian Ocean, you and your main squeeze can enjoy utter seclusion. Sip champagne in the shade of a palm overlooking an otherworldly sunset or get a little more adventurous, strap on a mask, and check out the abundant aquatic wildlife. Many hotels in the area even include access to an array of boats, perfect for your own private excursion along the mild waves. Of course, you could also always just stare, dumbfounded, into the horizon, wondering how such a place could actually exist on Earth.

Valentine’s Day is for fancy dinners, heart-shaped boxes packed with subpar chocolates, and fantasizing about the magical places you and your beau would have escaped to — if only you had the PTO. So, grab a glass of bottom-shelf cab sauv, cuddle up next to your special someone, and try to make them feel bad for taking you to Chili’s instead of whisking you away to one of these picturesque fantasy lands. Udaipur, India These days, meandering through the cobblestone streets of Paris with your loved one is très passé. All the real high-rolling romantics are migrating southeast to the famous Oberoi Udaivilas hotel in western India. Set in a traditional Mewari palace, visitors will feel like royalty as they stroll around the labyrinthine gardens that surround the elaborate cream-colored structure. Travelers can relax beside one of the many glassy pools sprinkled throughout the estate, all of which are enthusiastically attended by an unparalleled service staff. Positano, Italy More than perhaps anywhere in the world, this place looks like it was lifted straight from a sappy romance novelist’s imagination. You and your partner can kick back on a balcony overlooking the entirety
