Leave the thought with them that you are willing to help if additional help is necessary. If their problem is such that you are not able to assist because of lack of knowledge or training, encourage them to counsel with the pastor. If this has occurred or if you are sure that this problem is so involved that it re quires professional counsel, refer them to a competent, well-trained Christian counselor or psychologist. You will have to know what your city or community offers in terms of this type of help. 8. Prayer. It may be that you will want to pray with the person just before you finish talking. Do not feel that you always have to pray each time. There are occasions when you may feel that it would be best to wait. It is very comfort ing to the person to know that you will be remembering his situation daily in prayer. Be sure you do con vey this to him. Fortunately there are some re sources available that will assist the church worker in this needed area of counseling. Counseling for Church Leaders, by John Drakeford, Broadm an Press. This volume is very helpful. It is written for lay leaders in the church. Help! I’m a Camp Counselor, published by Regal Books, contains a chapter ‘‘What Do I Say Next?” that can assist the teacher and sponsor. Reality Therapy, by Dr. William Glasser, Harper and Row. This book has some simple and helpful sug gestions and techniques within the first half of the book. It is well worth reading and applying. It is difficult to avoid the minis try of counseling as it is a part of teaching, sponsoring or serving as a deacon. Since this is true, it is best to be fully equipped in order to extend our ministry further into the lives of the people to whom we have been called to minister. KB Mr. H. Norman Wright is Assistant Pro fessor of Religious Education at Talbot Theological Seminary and area represen tative for Gospel Light Publications.
