What’s Scarier Than Going to the Dentist?

anesthetics to keep him from feeling pain while we performed his procedure.

you want to feel more relaxed, you can get special-smelling air to breathe that makes you laugh. These are just a few of the ways we help people feel more comfortable when they visit our office. There are many things to be afraid of and visiting the dentist shouldn’t be one of them. However, we understand that for many folks of all ages, it’s nerve-wracking to think about that upcoming appointment. Fortunately, we have the technology and knowledge to make your visit a happy one. It’s natural to experience moments of fear, but we find that the more information you have about something, the less scary it becomes. My staff and I use a “tell, show, do” method so that our patients always know what to expect. We’ll tell you what we’re going to do, show you how it works, and then, once you understand and are ready, we’ll take care of the rest. I treated a young man last week, and I could tell right away that he was terrified of being in our office. He’d had a bad previous experience with another dentist, and it left him wary of being treated. After sharing some options with him and his mother, they decided that nitrous oxide, known as laughing gas, would help him feel more comfortable during treatment. We also used

As I walked out of the room, I heard him ask his mother, “Did he give me a shot?” His mom confirmed that I had. “I didn’t even feel it,” he said. I came back five minutes later, and he seemed at ease and stayed that way throughout his treatment. He wasn’t afraid of the experience any longer. Whenever I use anesthetics during a patient’s procedure, I call them later in the day to see how they are doing. That day, I was driving home after work with the intention of calling the young man I’d treated. As I pulled into my subdivision, I looked in my side mirror and saw the same young man I’d treated earlier that day. He was atop his mountain bike, happy as could be. He recognized me, and there was no sense of fear. He waved and smiled. When I got home, I followed through with my plan and called his mother to ask her how he was feeling. She told me it was the first time he’d said, “I’d go back to see him,” about a dentist. It was very gratifying. It’s so rewarding when I’m able to help make a visit to our office a positive one. While bees, spiders, and basements are all a little scary, we want to make a visit to the dentist something you look forward to.

What are you afraid of? Spiders? They can bite. Snakes? They can slither. Bees? They can fly and sting! Dark basements? They’re full of strange noises and possibly ghosts. Clearly, there are plenty of things scarier than going to the dentist. In fact, going to the dentist can be a lot of fun. You get to sit on a throne and wear cool glasses. You can watch cartoons while you’re there. You can even spot some of the “I Spy” pictures on the wall. You get to drink all the water you want, and we paint vitamins on your teeth. We might place cream on your lips that makes them feel funny, and at the end, you get a shiny coin for being the best helper. If

How Much Sunshine Is Too Much? To many people, summer is all about heading

plenty of shade? Will you have to bring your own? What’s the best way to step out of the sun for a few minutes? Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing are great ways to shield yourself from UV rays, but it’s important to avoid being in direct sunlight for long periods. Taking a break from the sun gives your body the time it needs to recuperate and helps prevent sunburn and heatstroke. COMMON MYTHS ABOUT SUN EXPOSURE Many people think that a tan is better than a sunburn, but the result of tanning is still sun damage. When your skin tone changes due to the sun, regardless of whether it tans or turns red, it’s a result of the epidermis reacting to damage caused by UV rays. Both are symptoms of harmed skin. While vitamin D is important, the sun does not contribute to its creation as much as you might think. Doris Day, a New York City dermatologist, explains that if your skin were to constantly produce vitamin D from being in the sun, it would reach toxic levels. Vitamin D is the only vitamin that your body can produce on its own, through a common form of cholesterol or 7-dehydrocholesterol. Spending time in the sun does help vitamin D form, but you need far less exposure than you think.

outside to enjoy the weather. But getting too much sun can be dangerous. To have a fun- filled summer with your family this year, remember that it’s essential to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.

COVER UP Covering your skin is one of the best ways to avoid skin

damage. Wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants or skirts can protect your skin from direct exposure to UV rays. While this tactic protects you from the sun, it offers poor defense against the

heat. So, if you opt for cooler attire, it’s important to cover all exposed skin with a copious amount of sunscreen. Be sure to reapply every two hours for maximum skin protection.

Knowing how to protect yourself from UV rays is the first step to having a safe, fun-filled summer!
