STAFF SPOTLIGHT

HILLARY HEITZMAN, OT “When I was 15 years old, I joined my mom on a trip to Camp Dream in Warm Springs, Georgia. Camp Dream is a camp that allows individuals with special needs to experience summer camp fun in a beautiful setting. One day as wewere

eating lunch, I saw a woman sitting with a young man in a wheelchair with difficulties using his arms. She had some different equipment and was encouraging him to feed himself. It looked too hard for himand I was eager to help. I walked over and said, “I’ll help him!” She politely responded, “Thanks somuch, but I’m trying to help him learn to feed himself. You can sit with us!” I sat down and quizzically asked, “But why? I don’t mind doing it for him.” She then explained that her job was an occupational therapist and she wanted this boy to gain skills to helpmake him as independent as he could possibly be. I was intrigued and watched her for the rest of that camp period. By the closing celebration on the last day of camp, I was hooked. I knew what I wanted to do with my life: occupational therapy. From that day at camp, I returned home and began to volunteer to learn more about helping others. I visited nursing homes with my family and the special needs classrooms at school. In May 2001, I graduated from Irwin County High School. I attended ABAC and earned a degree in Allied Health: occupational therapy. After ABAC, I transferred to the University of Georgia and began work on a Bachelor of Science of Psychology. Upon graduation in May 2005, I was accepted into the occupational therapy program at The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in St. Augustine, Florida. The program at USA was both challenging and inspiring. In St. Augustine, I met my best friend who became my husband in December 2007. My first job was as an occupational therapist at a skilled nursing facility in Jacksonville, Florida. After giving birth to our first son, Jace, in 2010, I moved from the nursing home into the large, urban school district of Duval County as a school-based occupational therapist. Our family began rapidly expanding with the arrival of Myla in January 2012. Later that year, with a 5-month-old and a 2-year-old, I was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. This unexpected journey led us through some dark valleys, but I wouldn’t trade the impact it had on my life and the life of my family. I gained a greater understanding of health challenges and, with that, empathy for my patients. My walk through cancer gave me an indescribable trust in God and thankfulness for every aspect of this life. I have humbly taken that into my OT practice and enjoy getting to bring some peace and love into what can be a scary, difficult time for some patients. Today I work as an independently contracted occupational therapist with the wonderful people at Southwest Georgia Fyzical Therapy, Irwin County Schools, and Turner County Schools. I am privileged to help out in skilled nursing facilities as needed in and around my community and at Tift Regional Medical Center outpatient therapy clinic when the need arises. I have had experience with all ages in my almost 13 years as an OT and have enjoyed each opportunity to serve. My husband and I have also been miraculously blessed to add three more beautiful children to our family: Liam (5), Fain Hamby (3) and Edie Mae (1). I am so thankful to the experience at Camp Dream for leading me to this profession, my family for encouraging and supporting my dreams and to God for blessing me more immensely than I could have ever imagined all those years ago when my dream began.”
