ing, and it’s not been a big problem for us, but it definitely is something that you need to be aware of and you need to focus on. Your words and your pre-press and the way that you prepare art files for the machine can create success or it can create failure. Having a good understanding of that is important. Jones: Jake, there’s a fear of potential obsolescence with digital. Have you experienced any of that? Sutherland: Transparently, at least on the hardware side, yes, I have felt that fear. I think obsolescence might be too strong a word, but it’s an evolving technology. We’re on the cutting edge. That’s part of the risk you take is knowing that there might be something around the cor- ner as more OEMs invest in this technology that’s going to supersede what you have on the floor within a matter of years. I think I think what helps assuage that fear is, at least with our equipment, we’ve had several updates. Again, these are Internet-connected machines, and the OEMs are able to push more updates that can cut the set up-time in half, increase machine speed. That’s where I’m looking to see potentially more invest- ment from the OEMs is, “what are we doing to support ma- chinery, the equipment that’s already on the ground?” Just one more point to add to that, because I do know we’re somewhat on the cutting edge, and I do know this technology is evolving, I think it’s even more important that you have the right people in place, the right processes, talking about what you do around pre-press. That’s going to be true with digital no matter the equipment. That’s what we’ve been working on at Sutherland, just making sure the rest of the organization is ready to ad- vance with the equipment. Wagner: The other challenge that we face, and I’m sure everybody is in the same boat, is that if you are a sheet plant and you’re trying to buy sheets for digital printing, it is quite a challenge. The industry is not up to speed for supply for sheet-fed single-pass digital printing. That’s been something that we’ve had to work on and we contin- ue to work on, and it’s a constant challenge. Maybe I’ll join the TAPI board and convince them that their tolerances are not right. But that is definitely a challenge for us. Perreira: In conversations with a lot of our community in this space, as a group we’ve already written a letter to Tappi to ask them to consider making a recommendation of one eighth of an inch per 12 instead of a quarter inch. The biggest challenge that all of us face is board warp. If you’re looking to get in to digital, the first thing you should do is line up a sheet supplier. Or internally, if you have a corrugator, talk to your team and figure out how you can really get a flat sheet off your machine because it is so vital to your success. These machines are built to run at speed, but you won’t be able to do that if your sheet is warped Wagner: It’s mission critical. There’s no doubt. If you give it the right material, these machines do wonders.
