THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH SOME MODERN WORDS AND PHRASES FROM THE MEDIEVAL LEXICON OF ENGLISH HUNTING

Hoodwinked This word comes from the Middle English phrase

I really enjoy listening to the podcast “History of English.” This podcast explores the history and development of the English language. I know, it’s super nerdy, but I find it fascinating to learn about the origins of the English language and how it has evolved over time. It is surprising to learn about the origins of some of the words we use in everyday communication. Some of the words and phrases don’t make sense to us now but made perfect sense in medieval England times. For example, one of my favorite podcast episodes is about the many modern words and phrases that originate from medieval hunting. “Old codger” and “bated breath” both come from this time period. The importance of hunting is reflected in the fact that the modern English language still contains many common words and phrases originating from the language of medieval hunters.

“hoodwinken,” which means to blindfold or cover the eyes. In hunting, it was used to describe covering a bird of prey’s eyes with a hood in order to keep it calm and focused on its prey. The hood was a way of deceiving the bird, pulling its focus away from one target to another. In that situation, the bird was said to be “hoodwinked,” and that led to the modern expression “hoodwinked” to mean the process of tricking or deceiving someone. Fed Up This phrase originally meant that a hawk had eaten enough food and was no longer hungry. A hawk who had eaten enough food would not do its job anymore (hunt). Fed up later came to mean being tired or annoyed with something. End of Your Tether This phrase originally referred to the rope that hunters would use to tie up their horses while they were out hunting. When they reached the end of their rope, they knew they’d gone as far as they could go without returning home. Hue and Cry This phrase comes from the old French words “hue” (meaning outcry) and “crier” (meaning to cry out). In medieval England, if someone witnessed a crime, they were required by law to raise the hue and cry, which involved shouting and making noise to alert others to the crime and help catch the perpetrator. Haggard It was originally used to describe an adult female hawk that was caught during migration, as they were often thin and tired from their long journey. Over time, the term was used to describe a person or animal that was thin and tired or worn out.

Here are some of my favorite examples from this podcast episode.

Bated Breath This phrase comes from the word “abate,” which means to reduce or lessen. In hunting, it was used to describe a falcon that had been restrained from flight until it was released to pursue its prey. The phrase “bated breath” came to mean holding one’s breath in anticipation or anxiety. Alluring This word comes from the French word “alurer,” which means to attract or entice. In hunting, it was used to describe the act of luring game animals with decoys or other bait. Pounce This word comes from the French word “poinçonner,” which means to prick or puncture. In hunting, it was used to describe the act of a bird of prey swooping down and seizing its prey with its talons.

Booze Sometimes, a hunting falcon would eat or drink too much and be “fed up.” This would happen when they would drink from a bowl called a “bows.” (The process was also referred to as “bows.”) Over time, the term “bows” shifted to “booze” — and this term became associated with drinking too much alcohol or getting drunk. Nowadays, “booze” is a noun that refers to alcoholic drinks. Old Codger Sometimes, a hunting falcon would be carried around on a mobile perch which was called a

“cadge.” The person who carried around the cadge was referred to as the “cadger.” This was usually an older hunter who was too old for regular hunting activities. Over time, the pronunciation of “cadger” shifted to “codger,” which is now used to refer to an “old codger.” –Tom Askeroth WORK COMP CORNER

Summer is here, and with it comes higher temperatures and an increased risk of heat-related illness in the workplace. THE DANGERS OF HEAT- RELATED ILLNESSES Heat-related illnesses can range from mild heat cramps to life-threatening heat stroke, and it’s important to be aware of the symptoms and know how to prevent and treat these illnesses. Heat cramps are the mildest form of heat illness and consist of painful muscle cramps and spasms that occur during or after intense exercise and sweating in high heat. Heat exhaustion is more severe than heat cramps and results from a loss of water and salt in the body due to excessive heat and sweating without adequate fluid and salt replacement. Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness, occurring when the body’s heat-regulating system is overwhelmed by excessive heat. This can be life-threatening, and if you or someone you know may be experiencing a heat stroke, professionals recommend you seek immediate medical attention. To protect yourself from heat-related illnesses while working, drink plenty of fluids, dress in lightweight and light-colored clothing, and take frequent breaks from activity. Also, try to plan vigorous work-related activities for cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening.

• 1/2 tbsp salt • 1 tbsp pepper • 2 tbsp olive oil

Directions

1. In a small bowl, whisk together yogurt, Dijon mustard, and dill to make the dill sauce. Set aside. 2. Drain the salmon, then remove and discard the bones and skin.
