The increased rate of internet usage in 2020, coupled with the existence of filter

bubbles, echo chambers and media biases provided far-right groups with an

effective means of recruitment, radicalisation, and the dissemination of their

extremist ideologies. Whilst the events of 2020 single-handedly ignited a surge

in far-right activity in the U.S., it was accelerated by media influences.

As society navigates technological advancements, we must employ a sense of

media literacy. In doing so, we can promote responsible journalism, increase

awareness of filter bubbles, and reduce the risk of echo chambers. Being open-

minded towards diverse opinions will broaden our knowledge of contemporary

issues enable collaboration rather than polarisation and allow the public to

mitigate the impact of extremist ideologies on the cohesion of society. Thus, we

will be a step closer to achieving Habermas’ perfect public sphere.
