Introduction
During 2020, 298.8 million U.S. citizens were accessing the internet, which accounts
for roughly 90 percent of the population. 240 million of those people were active social media users (around 72.3 percent of the population). 72 As depicted in Figure 1, there
had been a steady incline in rates of internet usage, but after the sudden peak in 2020,
the rate of digital growth returned to similar levels as seen in years before.
