which often involves leaving out key context and information, most commonly when this benefits a certain political party more than the other. 94
As pointed out by Sparks (2022), ‘when we read a simplified text – especially
text that frames things as us-versus-them – it’s easier to process than news reports
that examine the complex goings-on of Washington’. The use of biased language
or framing choices not only portrays certain groups in a negative light but may
also contribute to the demonisation of marginalised communities, potentially
fuelling any far-right sentiments that thrive on scapegoating. Media and news
outlets that seek higher engagement ratings often resort to some form of
sensationalism, which further contributes to the polarisation of society, as it
creates an environment where extremist views gain more attention whilst
moderate voices are being marginalised.
