I was born in Charlotte, Tennessee, which is a small-town south- west of Cheatham County What School did you attend? Until I reached 9th grade, I attended Ashland City graduated in 1979. Favorite Subject? As a student, my favorite subjects were math and science. Did you play sports? Growing up, I loved playing baseball and football. I played football for the Cheatham County Cubs. Favorite childhood memory? Elementary School. I then went to Cheatham County Central High School and I have lots of wonderful childhood memories. All my favorite memories involve doing fun things with the people I loved most in my life. Living in a loving home and having wonderful family and friends as neighbors made life happy and fun and taught me many valuable

We worked hard, but we also made time to have fun with our family and friends. What did you want to be when you grew up? As a child I wanted to be an architect or a teacher. It wasn’t until my adult years that I became interested in law enforcement and made it my career. How did you become Sheriff? I started working for the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Department in 1990 as a reserve deputy. I worked my way into a full time deputy position and later became a D.A.R.E. Officer. Being a D.A.R.E. Officer in school allowed me to live out one of my childhood dreams of being a teacher. I got to teach students about the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol. Before becoming Chief Deputy in 1995, I also worked as a Drug Agent, Investigator, and Sergeant for the Sheriff’s Department. I have worked for the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Department for 32 D.A.R.E.!

Cheatham County’s Sheriff. What does a Sheriff do?

Being Sheriff comes with a lot of responsibilities. The top priority of my position is to serve and keep the citizens of Cheatham County safe. A Sheriff is a leader who manages and oversees all the activity of the Sheriff’s department. As Sheriff, I will be responsible for the activity and duties of over 100 employees. I make sure police officers are trained properly and know the rules they must follow. Not only is a Sheriff in charge of police officers, but also directs budgets, planning, meetings, and other administrative duties. As Sheriff, I will oversee the county jail and make sure it functions appropriately and is safe for both employees and inmates. Communication is a vital part of my job. Not only will I handle of all media and press releases that involve the Sheriff’s Department, but I also keep citizens aware and educated about dangers and safety concerns in our community. Do laws help people? Why? Laws absolutely help people. Laws are made to help keep

people safe and set rules for what is right and wrong. Although the protection of people is the most important goal, laws also help to protect
