Farm to school enriches the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by changing food purchasing and education practices at schools and early care and education settings. The Cheatham County School System has been awarded a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm 2 School grant for the 2022- 2023 school year. In partnership with the Northwest Tennessee Local Food Network based in Martin, the Cheatham County School System is working to develop school and district Farm 2 School initiatives through the creation of a “Grow Cheatham” action plan.

with well-known Farm 2 Table chef Hal Holden-Bache a Kingston Springs resident and owner of Lockeland Table restaurant in East Nashville. He worked with cafeteria staffs to create and prepare local recipe dishes where student, parents, and the community had the opportunity to sample a variety of dishes featuring locally grown meats, vegetables, and fruits, and provide feedback on each dish. It is the hope this grant will allow the school district to make a long- term impact in the nutrition of our students and the local agricultural economy in Cheatham County. The Northwest Tennessee Local Food Network is hosting a Taste of Tennessee Harvest of the Month poster contest for students in grades K-12. Winners will be announced before Thanksgiving.
