if you hear, and believe God sent His Son, you have eternal life,” to which he assented. Then I asked him, “When do you get this eternal life?” “Why!” he said, “When I die.” “Well,” I said, “you don’t have to wait until you die for that Gospel I gave you.” “Oh, no,” he said, “I have it now,” and then the light broke in and he exclaimed, “Oh, I see. God says I have eternal life now, before I die,” and he showed it, too. Then I said, “Tell this man what you have re ceived,” and he there and then con fessed Christ. Praise God for His Word. Thus we deal with all who make a profession of faith in Christ, and it is such a joy to deal with these poor benighted people, who have never had the chance to hear the true Gos pel. Our hearts are often cheered by the work that is done by the new converts. An old couple who have moved to another town fifteen miles distant from Los Angeles have not failed to let their light shine, and the result has been the conversion of three other families, who have accepted Christ and are now studying the Word with this old couple. As a result of this step one of the women is suffering severe persecution from her mother and step-father. Her mother scolds and blasphemes, and reminds her that she was brought up a Catholic, and tells her that she did not want her to leave her religion. When they have worship in the home the mother, who lives next door, throws rocks at the house and makes quite a bit of dis turbance, but the daughter is firm in her new-found Saviour and never an swers a word. Thus it is with many who leave the Roman Catholic Church. They have to suffer for Christ’s sake, and that is what holds many back from accepting Christ. In a previous article we made men tion of several members of our Bible- training class who had gone to Mexico and were giving part time to spread ing the Gospel, and doing other work to pay expenses. They advise us that (Continued on page 494)

SPANISH WORK R obert H. B ender, Supt.— Gospel M eetings an d H ouse to H ouse W ork am ong 50,000 M exicans in Los A ngeles a n d V icinity. "'Behold 1 say u n to you, lift up y o u r eyes, and look upon the fields, fo r they are w hite already to h arv est.” H E, as laborers together with God, realize the above truth and fact more and more as we labor day by day in the great harvest field of the world. I believe there never was given to the Christians of today a greater opportunity to win souls than at the present time. During the summer months we have had great blessing and joy in winning many souls to the Lord. Day by day my son David and myself, with the baby organ, would go out Jo the railroad camps, and as soon as we began to play and sing, the peo ple would come out of their houses, bring a chair or a bench or a box and sit down and listen while we sang and gave the message. Our hearts have been cheered with the interest and attention that was given, and then as we gave the invitation, there was near ly always a response, from one to seven deciding for Christ. We did not content ourselves with simply the raising of the hand, but always we asked those who raised the hand to gather close by our side, and then we had the opportunity of pointing them to the Word of God, and that was gen erally John 5:24. One young man with whom we dealt is a sample of the many we meet. We took the Scripture and read, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life,0 etc. We would repeat this text over and over again, and the young man, on being asked what he would receive on hear ing and believing, said, “eternal life.” We asked him if he had it, and he said, (“No.” Then, as we had given him a Gospel of John, we said, “do you have that Gospel,” and he said, “Yes,” but we said, “Are you sure?” “Oh, yes; see, I have it.” Now I said, “God says,

through, the Northwest in Gospel work. Upon hearing that the Christian worker was from I>os Angeles, the man spoke up and said, “Why, that is where I was converted; in fact it was through some meetings that were being held by the Bible Institute in the shop where I worked that I came to hear the truth.” . Another incident illustrates the power of the Word, even though we see very few examples outwardly. While in Portland this last summer, the Superintendent of this department was in a certain place when he heard his name spoken and turned to look into the face of a man about thirty years of age, who said, “You don’t know me, do you?” Replying that we didn’t place him he spoke up: “I used to listen to you preach every Friday for three years at the Pacific Fruit Express Co. in Los Angeles,” Fur ther questioning brought out the fact that this man too, though unknown to - us, had received the Lord Jesus through our preaching, and was now on the road for a Steel Corporation, and when home was a regular attend ant of the Baptist Church of which he had become a member. Little do we realize how God blesses the Word. Coming up the steps the other day, one of the workers stopped us and said, “Some good news for you. The other evening we were talking to a young lady who decided for Christ. She said her father had taken his stand also and that all he wanted now was to hear the Gospel and have the Bible read at nights. Who do you suppose this man is but one of the fel lows that works at thè Union Pacific Shops.” He had been converted and had never told us about it. So you see the value of persistent seed sowing in simple faith, that after many days comes the harvest. Pray for the 3500 tracts^ that are each week given out to the hundreds of men in the shops in this city, to say nothing of the large number given away in the shops out of town.
