Holmes is an active freelancer and orchestral musician, as well. He currently holds the position of 4th horn with the Corpus Christi Symphony and is a substitute horn for the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the San Antonio Symphony, and several other regional orchestras in central Texas, including Brazos Valley, Temple, and Victoria. He has performed in recitals at regional workshops and the annual International Horn Symposium, and in 2023, he was the featured guest artist for HornFest hosted at Texas Christians University by Heather Test. Holmes received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Oklahoma State University and his Master of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts in Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. His primary teachers are Lanette Compton and Patrick Hughes. Patrick Hughes With a tone and musicality described as “pure chocolate”, Patrick Hughes has soloed in recitals throughout the US, at annual regional horn conferences, and at over 20 International Horn Symposia. International ventures include performances in Jamaica, China, Australia, Thailand, the UK, Brazil, Belgium, and Canada. He is an oft-featured soloist with various ensembles at the University of Texas (recently performing Ligeti’s Hamburg Concerto by György and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante) as well as the Northwestern Percussion Ensemble, the St. Olaf Orchestra, and the Dallas Wind Symphony. The Dallas Morning News described Hughes as “…a dream soloist…His tone was warm and honeyed, his virtuosity and legato both apparently effortless.” Mr. Hughes wears many hats at the University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music: Associate Professor of Horn, Head of the Brass Wind and Percussion Division, and Director of the award-winning UT Horn Choir. He also enjoys an active and varied musical life as pedagogue, soloist, chamber musican and composer. Compositions/arrangements include a number of pieces for Horn Choir and horn in chamber music including: From Hildegard, Dancing on the Hill, True Colors, Pange Lingua, and Morrison’s Jig, and Climbin’. Mr. Hughes hosted two Mid-South Horn Workshops at the UT, has adjudicated for the International Horn Competition of America, served on the IHS Meir Rimon Commissioning Assistance Fund committee, and was an elected member of the IHS Advisory Council from 2015-2021. Currently, he’s a member of the Cortado Quartet, teaches every summer at KBHC, and plays a custom Patterson horn.
