Given the global accolades, it was not surprising to see The Tasman crowned the best accommodation venue of the year – Metro and finish a narrow runner up to Saffire Freycinet in the best deluxe hotel accommodation category at the 2022 THA Awards for Excellence. And for all instant success the hotel is receiving, Morahan is adamant it is just playing a role in helping Tasmanian hospitality and tourism rebound from the affects of Covid-19. “Yes, we’re a hotel within Tasmania, and you’re coming to a Marriott banner, which is the biggest hotel chain in the world, but we feel that we did a great job in developing a product that was for the locals first, particularly the food and beverage side of it. “We also want to ensure we are working with industry, whether it be THA or Tourism Tas, as a state asset, not just the hotel, but we sell tourism for Tasmania because that then flows back to us and then everybody else within the state. “We all need to work together on that, it’s all about our providers and our suppliers, working with our tour operators who are out there providing the activities when people are going outside, whether it be the MONA’s or the Rob Pennicott’s and also what the accommodation is like in the regional areas. “What we have here is people will come and stay with us, but then they’re going up north to Launceston or they’re going to Pumphouse Point, or they’re going to Saffire and experiencing the entire state. “That collectively, helps all of us. We just happen to often be the start and the finish, but everything in between is what contributes, it is destinational.

“There’s only us and another property in Australia that made it to that list, which is extraordinary. That was off the back of all the hard work that everybody had done throughout the period of opening, but also the brand Tasmania helps with that, because Tasmania is a destination.” - General Manager Stephen Morahan
