INTERVJU / INTERVIEW
CLIVE OWEN, ACTOR I kinda drowned in Bogart
We’re watching the series on the Epic Drama chan- nel from the beginning of this year, and in this inter- view with Owen we discover more about the role that he has been preparing for seriously - to succeed Bo- gart in one of the roles that marked his career, por- traying the character of a retro detective linked to the glory days of Hollywood. - In preparing for this role I simultaneously satis- fied all my artistic frailties, given that I’m addicted to the period in which the series is set. It’s not enough to say that I merely prepared for this role. because I watched so many Bogart films and listened to so many of his audio recordings in order to immerse myself in the character of Sam Spade as much as possible. In contrast to fellow actors who, in similar situations, try to distance themselves from the original, I tried to embrace it to the max. Why would I distance my- self from someone who’s already done a perfect job? Says this actor at the start of our conversation, add- ing that he relished spending his mornings listening to the voice of Humphrey Bogart. Did you get the chance to do everything just like Bogart? - Yes, absolutely everything. I drove classic cars, wore vintage coats and drank from a bottle. Just like Bogart. It was somewhat of a dream role. I’m a huge fan of this genre. The only two things that I had to fight for were to be allowed to wear a hat and a gun. This
I pushed myself to the limits of my acting ability, as I was given the terrifying task of succeeding someone like the legendary Bogey H ave you totally forgotten the film that defined film noir as a genre? And what about Sam Spade? The Maltese Falcon was created under the brilliant direction of John Huston, who gave us a detective that couldn’t be outwitted by anyone; the best to walk the streets of the U.S. and the baddest in San Francisco... The legendary Humphrey Bogart and his inimitable characters have been slightly forgotten today, but not completely – as long as there are still those who fall in love with film thanks to the Golden Age of Hollywood. One of those who has been forever infected by Bogart is Oscar nominee and Emmy, Bafta and Golden Globe winning British actor Clive Owen. This January will see him taking on the biggest challenge of his acting ca- reer with the series Monsieur Spade, reviving the role of crime writer Dashiell Hammett’s cult detective, who was previously portrayed only by Humphrey Bogart.
