BEAUTIFUL VIEW The Belvedere comprises the Upper and Lower palaces and is pro- tected as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site, while many consider it the world’s most beautiful Baroque building. Constructed in the 18 th century to serve as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, it is today a museum that preserves the most important works of Aus- trian art from medieval times to the present day, while it also boasts paintings by foreign artists like Claude Monet or Vincent van Gogh. Forming part of the complex is a Baroque park that was designed by a French architect, which is why it naturally includes elements inspired by the Park of Versailles Palace. The garden is dotted with sculptures, fountains and cascading water features, and the view from the Up- per Palace extends beyond the garden to encompass much of Vienna, hence the name Belvedere (beautiful view). One special attraction of the Lower Palace is Martino Altomonte’s im- pressive fresco on the ceiling of the Marble Hall, in which Prince Eugene is depicted as the god Apollo. The Upper Belvedere also has great his- torical significance because it was there that the treaty creating the modern Austrian state was signed in 1955. This part of the palace is nonetheless best known for housing the world’s largest collection of Klimt paintings.
Lep pogled Dvorac Belvedere čine dve palate, Gornja i Donja, deo je Une- skove kulturne baštine, a mnogi za njega kažu da je najlepša barokna građevina na svetu. Podignut je u 18. veku kao letnja rezidencija princa Eugena Savojskog. Danas je muzej sa najzna- čajnijim delima austrijske umetnosti od srednjeg veka do da- nas, a tu su naravno i slike umetnika kao što su Klod Mone ili Vin- sent van Gog. Deo kompleksa je i barokno uređen park koji je projektovao fran- cuski arhitekta, pa odatle ima uzore u Versajskom parku. Vrt je prepun skulptura, fontana i vodenih kaskada, a sa gornje pala- te se, osim na vrt, pruža prelep pogled na Beč. Odatle i ime ovog dvorca – Belvedere (lep pogled). Jedna od posebnih atrakcija Donje palate je impozantna freska na tavanici Mermerne sobe, delo Martina Altomonta, na kojima je Eugen prikazan kao Apolon. Gornji Belvedere pak ima veliki istorijski značaj jer je u njemu 1955. godine potpisan ugovor ko- jim je stvorena moderna austrijska država. Ipak, ovaj deo dvorca najpoznatiji je po najznačajnijem slikaru austrijske secesije budu- ći da se tu nalazi najveća kolekcija dela Gustava Klimta na svetu.
