Vienna has everything you need
DASLOFT
This city might utilise its glorious past as an advantage, but scratch the surface a little and you’ll discover that there’s much more to it than it seems at first glance
VIENNA IS ONE OF THOSE CITIES THAT REALLY HAS EVERYTHING TO OFFER . Known worldwide for Viennese coffee house culture (in our hum- ble opinion, you'll find Europe’s best cafés here), the atmosphere might well be chilled, but the Aus- trians certainly know how to have fun. You’re awaited here by un- forgettable museums, attractions and historical buildings, but also markets and world-class restau- rants where you can enjoy local specialities. As afternoon gives way to evening, head to one of the wonderful rooftop bars or
beer halls to kick the night off in the right way. Avoid the hyped hotel chains and seek unrivalled chic accom- modation at Rosewood Vienna. This luxurious five-star hotel is housed in a historically impor- tant building from the 19 th cen- tury that’s located on one of the most famous squares in the old part of Vienna and has been stun- ningly restored. It has a dynam- ic brasserie that serves innova- tive Austrian-French cuisine, a rooftop bar and a superb Asaya Spa offering deluxe treatments. You can also rent the indoor-out- door Garden Room venue for pri- vate dining. Once you've settled in com- fortably, it’s time to indulge your sweet tooth by trying the most famous Viennese cake: Sacher- torte, a local speciality that’s a lavish combination of dense choc- olate torte with an apricot jam filling and dark chocolate glaze, traditionally served with neutral whipped cream. Must try it! Burn the extra calories with a long walk through the Neubau district. Once Vienna’s most mod- ern, emerging quarter, it has today matured into a cool and relaxed neighbourhood – think of Lon- don’s Clerkenwell neighbourhood combined with the best parts of Berlin. Rents remain affordable in this 7 th district of Vienna, which is why it’s home to unique bou- tiques, bars and restaurants. Why visit? For a start, the food is fan-
tastic. There’s Erich, a subterrane- an restaurant/taqueria with one of the city’s best drinks menus, and its sister restaurant Ulrich, which offers wonderful brunch options. Also located nearby is TIAN Bistro am Spittalberg, one of the city’s top vegetarian/ve- gan restaurants. If you fancy a cocktail, drop in at Moby Dick, which is renowned for its inno- vative cocktails and food pairings. Vienna has seen a flourish- ing of rooftop bars and terraces over recent years, tailored to suit a range of budgets, tastes and views. From the bright and opulent in- terior of Das LOFT to the 360º OCEAN SKY at the top of Haus des Meeres aquarium, there are skyline views for everyone. The Lamée Rooftop Bar offers a view dominated by the spire of St. Ste- phen’s Cathedral, which feels so close that you could almost reach out and touch it. Stunningly situated in the Burggarten garden, next to the Hofburg, the Palmenhaus is per- haps the world’s grandest glass- house. Home to tall tropical trees and plants from around the world, it also operates as a restaurant and bar that offers modern Austrian specialities made with local ingre- dients, as well as snacks and cock- tails. If you try nothing else, the ‘must’ here is the cheese platter with a glass of local wine. It’s also very photogenic, both its interior and exterior, and is also an excel- lent venue for people watching.
