Cornwall’s little historian: Sara Lauzon FRANCIS RACINE inforeflet.news@eap.on.ca

happened there,” she said. “Most of the peo- ple there had no money or families, so they were buried on the house’s property”. Lauzon then reveals her future project. “I want to set up a plaque for all the peo- ple that have been buried there,” she said emotionally. “They didn’t have grave mark- ers.” Bodies were often dug up, as construc- tion was begun along the properties of the House. As she is talking, she explains that the mu- seum has a very extensive artifact collec- tion, which she is currently utilizing in the hopes of furthering her research. “I initially went to the library to find an old registry of the house of refuge I had heard about,” she said. “When I found them they were photo- copies and I actually wrote down all of the names that were in them.” Lauzon then goes on to explain that the photocopies had cut the bottom part of the pages, leaving out some names. “One day when I was in the museum, Ian (Bowering), the museum’s curator, pointed to a corner and said that we had it,” said an obviously excited Lauzon. “I just couldn’t believe it!” As she finishes her sentence, Lauzon opens the registry, exposing countless signatures, all by hand.“I’ve researched about 80 names in here,” she said with a giggle, “and that’s in a whole year”. Lauzon, a self proclaimed normal people historian, has always loved researching the average people who more

often than not, simply vanish in history. “This woman came in the house with a two- year-old son” she said while pointing at a faded name. Recently, Lauzon represented Cornwall at a conference held in Midland. “It was really fun” she said with a smile. “I was inviting people to come to Cornwall.” When asked about her future following her studies, Lauzon pondered for a while and then explained that she would love to stay in Cornwall. “I grew up in Cornwall, this is where I want to be” she said. Although very outspoken, the university student claims that it’s often hard to find

someone her own age who shares the same passion she has for history. “People my age usually don’t have a passion for the past like I do” said Lauzon, laughing. In an attempt at making the history she covers more “hip”, the university student created her own website, saraloveshistory.com. There she posts her current projects as well as her past endeavors. Asked if she ever thought of writing a book describing her deep knowledge of the area, Lauzon smiled. While organizing the count- less papers and folders in front of her, she looked up and said,“I might one day but not right now. I don’t really have time”. RE/MAX CORNWALL REALTY INC.

CORNWALL | Surrounding 22-year-old Sara Lauzon are artifacts from Cornwall’s house of refuge, including books and pic- tures. The St-Lawrence College graduate and now University of Ottawa student has always been fascinated by history. “When I was younger, I walked everywhere,” explained Lauzon. “I would see all the old and dif- ferent buildings and then ask my parents about them”. The little historian, a name bestowed upon her by a local newspaper, has always been a dedicated visitor of the Upper Canada Vil- lage. “I used to go there once a year and I still do,” said Lauzon. “I’m actually going this weekend”. Asked what she has been working on lately, the energetic university student quickly opens a folder and produces two black and white photographs.“These are the only known pictures known of patients at the house of refuge to exist “, said a smiling Lau- zon. The photographs reveal several elderly men, some sitting on beds while others are lying down. Some are starring at the cam- era, their eyes saddened. “It’s very sad what
