OPTICAL CONNECTIONS WEBINARS 2023

Following on from successes in previous years, Optical Connections is continuing our webinar series in 2023 with a session on Support Systems for Fibre Networks . Developed in conjunction with the Market Focus Committee, the webinar programme was launched in early 2021. OPTICAL CONNECTIONS WEBINAR SERIES 2023

SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR FIBRE NETWORKS: 21ST JUNE, 2023.

• Five windows of 18 minutes or four windows of 23 minutes (15 or 20 minutes plus three min of direct questions) • 20 minutes of Q&A involving the whole panel • 3-5 minutes of closing remarks GET INVOLVED! Interested in speaking at our webinars? The Optical Connections webinar series is a fantastic opportunity for 4 to 5 speakers to come together to discuss the latest industry developments. If you would like to be considered for a 12-15 minute live presentation in the webinar, followed by an in-depth panel discussion with our webinar hosts, please email webinars@opticalconnectionsnews.com with a 100-word presentation proposal, your name, job role and company name.

From having a real-time view of everything that is happening across a network, to rolling out new services and ensuring a positive customer experience, Operational Support Systems (OSS) are the key to monitoring, controlling and monetising networks. Traditionally, these systems have been largely physical parts of the network, but the switch from copper to fibre and the move towards running them in the cloud means vendors are having to rethink their offerings. This webinar aims to cover all areas of fibre network management with presentations from senior experts in the industry. SCHEDULE: We are planning a 2-hour webinar with four or five speakers, to be scheduled as follows: • A brief 5 minute intro from one of the moderators

SUSTAINABILITY IN TELECOM SERVICES AND TECHNOLOGIES – 29TH MARCH 2023

OPTICAL CONNECTIONS WEBINAR SERIES IN 2021 • Close to the Edge: Fibre for any-haul in 5G access networks – 31st March 2021 • Replacing the copper infrastructure – 26th May 2021 • Managing the fibre network – 15th July 2021 fixed optical network production and use in a larger context. He also discussed the electricity savings potential under different scenarios, and proposed policy and technology implications. GREEN ICT – CHALLENGES AND REQUIREMENTS Klaus Grobe, Senior Director Global Sustainability, ADVA This presentation gave an overview on ICT environmental aspects, focusing on wireline network equipment. Relevant drivers and challenges related to ICT’s environmental footprint were identified, including the question of longevity vs. energy efficiency. This was complemented by a brief overview on legal and other relevant requirements related to environmental sustainability in ICT. GREENER NETWORKS MADE POSSIBLE BY COHERENT INNOVATIONS Helen Xenos, Senior Director, Portfolio Marketing, Ciena In her presentation, Ciena’s Helen Xenos explained how greener networks are made possible by continuous innovation in coherent optical technology, which supports exponential capacity increases while keeping power and energy consumption in check. She said the surging demands of our hyperconnected world means businesses must continue to adapt and take action to transform their networks.

This first webinar in our 2023 series was a great success and enjoyed by the many participants who attended. Introduced and moderated by Market Focus committee members Stephan Neidlinger and Pierpaolo Ghiggino, presentations included: THE ENERGY AND CARBON FOOTPRINT OF ICT AND ENTERTAINMENT AND MEDIA. Jens Malmodin, Senior Specialist, Ericsson Jens Malmodin noted that energy and the carbon footprint of ICT have been constant since about 2010 while the footprints of entertainment and media have decreased significantly. He concluded that continuous improvements and miniaturisation year by year, and sometimes larger steps due to brand new technologies, has not only led to lower energy consumption, but also less overall use of materials. FUTURE TRENDS OF GREEN ALL OPTICAL NETWORKS IN A LARGE CONTEXT

Dr. Anders. S.G. Andrae, Assistant Chief Expert of Environmental Protection Technology, Huawei.

OPTICAL CONNECTIONS WEBINAR SERIES IN 2022 • Webinar 1: Optical Communications – 4th May 2022 • Webinar 2: Fibre: how to monetise? – 27th July 2022 Dr. Andrae predicted that volumes of data to be handled in the future will be very large and therefore the networks of the future have to possess certain characteristics. His presentation included slides showing foreseen trends for key metrics and power saving technologies, along with macro graphs placing
