The Legend of Nanuk & the Spirit of Snow n the northernmost town of the Arctic, Longyearbyen built between mountains, lived a bright and fluffy Samoyed named Snowflake. Her white fur was glowing like the snow which blanketed the world around her, and her warm brown eyes were filled with curiosity and love. She belonged to a kind family who often took her on adventures through the frosty wilderness of Svalbard. When they stayed in town, her best friend Pingo from Basecamp walked with them. The family waits to adopt him until he retires from his job as a sled dog; he visits them and plays with Snowflake when he isn’t working. Sled dogs on Svalbard are working animals, not pets. This year, the night before their departure on another trip, Snow- flake couldn’t contain her excitement. As her family packed the sled with equipment to head out, Snowflake dashed outside, her paws kicking up the sparkling snow. The sky above was clear, and the stars twinkled like diamonds, casting an ethereal glow over the landscape. She stopped for a moment, her breath forming little clouds in the icy air, and looked up. As the sky stretched endlessly above her, Snowflake saw something un- believable. High above her, a sleigh pulled by reindeer raced across the sky, the soft jingle of bells faintly reaching her ears. The silhouette of Santa Claus, his red suit and flowing white beard unmistakable, flew through night, leaving a trail of shimmering snow behind him. Snow- flake tilted her head in awe, her tail wagging in excitement at the sight. For a short moment, she imagined joining Santa on his journey, flying through the winter sky and visiting faraway places. But wasn’t it early for Santa to leave the North Pole? Soon, her family called for her to return inside, and she ran happily to their side, still with the vision of Santa and his reindeer fresh in her mind when she fell asleep by her favorite humans. The following day, December 8th, the family started their annual trip to the cozy small winter cabin near the eastern coast. Snowflake loved these trips, especially the long walks and running next to the snow- mobile while her favorite toys, the snowflakes, swirled around her.
