Nanuk's Christmas Stories

2 The Legend of Nanuk & the Spirit of Snow

Nanuk told Snowflake more stories of the Arctic as they journeyed—of the great hunts, the ancient spirits, and the endless cycle of life and rebirth under the northern lights. She told her about a human girl on a ship far out close to the North Pole. Snowflake listened, her fear melting away, replaced by wonder and awe. Finally, as the first faint rays of the sun began to break through the clouds, Snowflake saw the lights of Longyearbyen twinkling in the distance. Her heart filled with joy, and she barked excitedly. Nanuk stopped and looked at her with a gentle smile. “This is where I will leave you, little one. Remember, the Arctic is harsh but also full of magic and love. You might feel lost sometimes, but you are never truly alone.” With a soft nuzzle, Nanuk began to fade, her form dissolving into the dancing snow. Snowflake watched as the sparkling flakes drifted into the sky, blending with the morning light. She started running past the dog yard at the beginning of the valley where Basecamp is located. Pingo barked and jumped out of joy to see Nanuk; she ran past the fence with a loving bark and promised to see him later. She ran into town, her family’s joyous cries ringing through the air as they came to greet her. They wrapped her in blankets and held her close, tears of relief streaming down their faces. That second advent morning, as the family gathered by the fire, Snowflake lay at their feet, her heart full of warmth and wonder, and next to her lay Pingo. Now adopted and a Christmas present for the whole family. Outside, the storm had passed, leaving the world glittering and still. If one looked closely at the snowflakes falling gently from the sky, they might catch a glimpse of a shimmering figure watching over the Arctic, ensuring that all who wandered its vast expanse found their way home.
