4 The Magic of the Wandering Ones
“The Guardians?” Kavi tilted his head in curiosity, his breath rising in tiny clouds. He had heard the elders whisper about the ocean’s protectors but never in detail. His mother nodded, her eyes glimmering with a mixture of awe and reverence. “Long ago, before the ice first blanketed these waters, the oceans were watched over by the most graceful and powerful creatures. They are called Megaptera, though today most have forgotten their true name. Humans call them humpback whales.” Kavi’s eyes widened. “Humpback whales? I’ve never seen one.” His mother smiled gently. “Few have. They are rare in these icy waters now, but they are still here, silent and watchful. These whales are not just creatures of the sea, Kavi; they are the ocean’s peaceful protectors, the keepers of harmony. Without them, the balance of life would begin to fray, like threads pulled from a woven cloth.”Kavi’s heart raced. “What makes them so special?” Their song,” she said. “It is said that the Megaptera’s song carries the memory of the sea—every wave, every current, every life that has ever swum in its depths. Their voices hold the magic of connection, binding the waters together, so every creature has a place. Even the ice answers their call, for they sing to heal the oceans and to guide the lost home.”Kavi’s paws tingled with excitement. “Can I hear them?” “Perhaps,” his mother said. “But only those who remember their name and understand their importance can truly hear their song. Few creatures remember, and even fewer listen. But you, my little one, have the gift of magic.”
