Nanuk's Christmas Stories

4 The Magic of the Wandering Ones

The news of Kavi’s gift spread among the polar bears, and for the first time in generations, the Wandering Ones felt hope. The old ones remembered the tales, and they taught Kavi what he needed to know. That Christmas, he learned the art of weaving ice and, with the guidance of his mother, all about the Guardians of the Oceans, Megaptera. One day he hoped he could see one, and learn more about his world that began to be forgotten even by his own kind. And so, each year, on Christmas Eve, the polar bears remember Kavi, the cub who brought back the magic. New born cubs gather near breathing holes, watching for the creatures below, hoping for a glimpse of that silvery friend who shared the first spark with Kavi, or a glimpse of Megaptera. To this day, they say, if you’re very quiet and you listen to the ice on Christmas Eve, you might just hear the ancient song of the Ice Weavers and Whales. The song of life and magic, of creatures seen and unseen, and of hope that endures as long as the ice itself.
