Diary of an HR Manager

Monday 8.20 am On the train, reading – yet again - my curated list of actions in anticipation of the flood of changes over the coming year due to the Employment Rights Bill: I broke it down into the following: Nothing to do as does not apply: End fire and rehire End “exploitative” zero-hour contracts Easily implemented – to adjust in the employee conditions: Day one right to sick pay Day one right to unfair dismissal Day one right to bereavement leave Day one protections for pregnant women & new mothers returning to work Expanding the Equality (Race and Disparity) Bill to make it mandatory for large employers to report their *ethnicity and disability pay gap Statutory probation period. Already in place: Right to Switch Off, preventing employees from being contacted out of hours, except in exceptional circumstances Flexible working the default for all within business limits – we were already running this on a gradual roll out across the company.

She would be travelling from Wiltshire and me from East Anglia, so we’d agreed that to arrive fresh and ready for 9.00 am we’d book rooms at the Premier Inn and walk across to the Centre. I’d received confirmation of our advance booking times with the vendors this morning and would be sending across a list of things
