veryone loves vast vistas, ocean breezes, mountain passes, boulders, trees, big sky, and just being out with nature, especially if you are an artist with your materials ready to go. In September 2019, I retired from working with my family after 43 years. A few months later the Covid pandemic struck and the world went into a spiral. Once things settled down, I was ready to get outside and enjoy na- ture, so I bought my first small van. It has two beds, a full kitchen, and a bathroom. I got on the road with my wife, Diane. We drove from Florida to Colorado. There is nothing like touring in a van. It’s slow and the seats are up high. It’s perfect for touring. I also picked up a pair of eBikes which completes the journey in a way I never thought possible. Those bikes give you the freedom of the last mile or two, effortlessly. You can ride up mountains, or around a city after parking far enough away from traffic that you are still only minutes away from downtown. Plus, the eBike has panniers that can be filled with all sorts of materials, including; all my art supplies; a small chair; and canvas. In anticipation of the tour, I went to the art store and bought some Derwent Inktense Pencils. They are highly saturated watercolor pen- cils. Those pencils made all the difference in the works that follow. With them, I could experiment and have great control. A few years prior, I also started using an Ipad Pro with the Apple pencil. Back then, I started using a pixel-based app, called Artrage and focused on it until I understood almost every feature. It’s a great app. My 2016 was so prolific it forms two volumes. My 2018-2019 work is filled with finished pieces from this app. After a while, it left me feeling like I want- ed more. I kept downloading apps and finally stumbled upon Affinity Designer, a professional art-making tool par excellence. Its main focus is vector illustrations. I still use traditional tools as you will see, but when I take them into the digital realm the results are magical.

INTRODUCING THE ADVENT OF VECTOR PAINTING

IPENCIL

Drawing on the Ipad glass is not as satisfying as drawing on paper. The glass is slippery and the results seem tight. I prefer watercolor paper and pencils. Without realizing it I have combined the two to come up with a new way of painting I call, “Vector Painting.” Finding inspiration was easy, The United States is choke-filled with places to visit. I started drawing with the pencils, softly at first, and more boldly in time. The results were hard to see. The watercolor pencil drawings are muted without water. Back at the van, I would touch a soft brush to water and open up the drawings discovering the composition as the saturation increased. The colors were always surprising because of the special pen- cils I was using. They were bold and bright. The watercolor painting was fine but I was going for something more polished. It wasn’t what I was trying to achieve. I was trying to make something iconic. I covered the whole thing with guache. Guache is an opaque acrylic. It allowed me to tease out the shapes from the painting. Once separated, I took a photo with my iPhone and air-dropped it into the Ipad. This technology is a miracle. Using the Apple pencil I copied the shapes and then filled them with pure digital colors, teasing out the results you are about to see. They are breathtaking. Once I found a system I liked I also took photos and brought them di- rectly into the Ipad. Then I made hundreds of shapes following the lines on the photo. It’s the iPad that makes this possible I would never take this amount of time sitting in front of a desktop machine. The Ipad is very relaxing to work with. You will soon recognize these pieces by their photographic qualities. All in all, it was a good year.

The Burning Bush VEDAUWOO, WYOMING

The Garden of the Gods is a natural landmark a the foot of Pike’s Peak in Colorado. It is known for towering red rocks that are a marvel to see. Named by Rufus Cable, a surveyor, when he first saw them he proclaimed, “a fit place for the Gods to assemble!” Walking around the place anyone would think each separate outcropping could be considered something titanic, a God. I found it odd in America, where most of the people believe in one God that this place achieved a name more akin to the Hindus. But, I guess it is all in jest. A harmless name for a stunning natural setting. When I was drawing I was looking for figures in the rocks. I found a few. See if you can if you can see the Indian Head, the Bear, and the Wolf. - Shoosty

WHITE BUFFALO

WHITE BUFFALO

The surprising thing about seeing Ni- agra falls the first time was that my ide- alized mental version was again nothing like reality. I expected blue water. What I saw was white, and a dark brown river. While pondering it what captured my imagination, is very hard to draw; the mist. The mist was everywhere in large masses above and below the falls. I took an elevator ride 18 floors down through the rock to the bottom. There you get to walk on a rickety wooden platform in sandals and a raincoat while the falls spill through the platform.

I felt the power of the water rushing over my cold feet. Luckily, it was a warm day. I started drawing, studying the white water, the slippery-soaked boulders, and the mist. I thought about Japanese woodblocks and how they use stylization to represent water. With- out realizing it the mist started to look like horns and the water like dreadlock strands of hair. An epiphany formed in front of my eyes, I was drawing the white buffalo bigger than life! Niagra falls “is” the white buffalo!

A Thematic Study of the Art of Stephen Shooster aka Shoosty A remarkable fact about the art of Shoosty is the meticulous work he did in documenting every single piece of art he has ever made from childhood drawings to his current work. It comprises over ten volumes of manuscripts. Seeing the work of an artist unfold over time gives the viewer and art historian a way of seeing how an artist develops, the various stages they go through and how the tools that surround artists especially in the 21st century are evolving as quickly as the person.
