Broodstock Collection of Savannah Lilliput and Carolina Creekshell in the Upper Cape Fear Basin

S taff conducted six snorkel surveys in tributaries to the Deep River in search of broodstock for two state endangered mussels, the Carolina Creekshell ( Sagittunio vaughanianus) and Savannah Lilliput ( Toxolasma pullus ). Staff put in a total of 78 per- son-hours during these surveys and successfully located three gravid Savannah Lilliput in Richland Creek and one gravid Carolina Creekshell from New Hope Creek. The Savannah Lilliput were transferred to Yates Mill Aquatic Conservation Center and the Carolina Creekshell was transferred to the Greensboro Science Center where they will begin propagation efforts. Once propaga- tion is complete staff will use the propagated individuals to augment existing populations in the upper Cape Fear River Basin.
