Perhaps the best resolution is simply one of receptivity and love, letting good actions follow, and sharing stories of those who have lived in such beautiful ways that may inspire the rest of us. E.B. White wrote to Carson after Silent Spring was published, only a year and a half before she would pass away from cancer: “I’m unable adequately to express my gratitude to you for attempting to decontam- inate this lovely world, and when the thrush sings in my woods again (and I’m sure he will) I will think of you every time, and give thanks.” She wrote back, expressing gratitude to White for his own, less rec- ognized efforts to write about man’s threat to the environment, and thanking him for his previous letter: “I can think of no lovelier memo- rial than the song of a thrush.” Rebecca Henson, Founder and Executive Director of Springsong Museum, is a Maryland Master Naturalist and mother to two na - ture-loving boys.
