Understanding Suffering... ...continued from page 13

can see no other way to express himself and his life anymore. Howev- er, if he sees himself as someone who made his living playing football, and now he has to make his living in a different way — maybe coach - ing, maybe as a sports broadcaster, or even becoming a restaurateur — then his sense of Self is not diminished. If you are feeling disabled in some way, identifying with your disability will undoubtedly affect your sense of mastery, which is all about being able to live your life as you would choose as opposed to fate determining it for you. We can also suffer when we perceive a serious threat or damage to our expectations of Self in terms of what we will no longer be able to do. We can believe some essential part of Self is being destroyed. Phys- ical trauma also has a way of reminding us of how we bags of water are vulnerable and mortal; a major injury or disability may be the first time we are confronting our time-limited existence here on the planet. Suffering from injury and disability can be diminished when we be - lieve we are capable of caring for ourselves and managing the conse- quences of illness or injury. For those individuals who do not develop confidence and beliefs about their capacity to undertake behaviors that may lead to improved health or adaptation to disability, they may not engage in health promoting behaviors, thereby diminishing their sense of Self as well. It is an illusion that with enough determination one can battle and triumph over mind, body or spirit successfully. The American belief in the character of rugged individualism and “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is an illusion when confronted with the reality of per- manent injury. Our culture does not advocate acceptance; it equates it with surrender, and therefore acceptance becomes identified with being a loser, and no one likes being a loser. Thus begins the endless struggle with a battle that cannot be fought by resistance, for in resist- ing pain, it looms only larger in our awareness. Being powerless to change one’s injury or disability can lead to im - ages of self-worthlessness and a sense of being imprisoned in a nev- er-changing life situation, especially if one believes one should have the power to change circumstances. Given the media and all the visual representations of active healthy individuals (even drug commercials on television show healthy active people) suggesting how we are sup - posed to be, it is easy in our society to develop a sense of worthlessness when confronted with our own reality, which unfortunately can lead to one distrusting Self and others. It is easy for us to become impris- oned in our own life situation due to our perceived limited choices and abilities. As stated previously, suffering arises from resistance, from aversion to what is happening. When an individual acquires a disability, and the story telling part of the Self identifies with the disability as op- posed to experiencing disability, then there is suffering as the Self is no longer experienced as whole and is, perhaps, “broken.” One must learn to change the narrative of suffering to move beyond.
