“For sadder sight than eye can know, Than proud bark tossed or seaman’s woe, Than battle fire or tempest cloud, Or prey-birds! shriek or ocean shroud, Is the shipwreck o f a soul.” —W . E . B iederwolf . III. T he S tory T h at R eaches H earts John B. Gough used to tell o f how an ignorant Bible reader would gather a rough crowd about him, and with open Bible in hand would begin his talk in this way: “ Fellers, I’ve got a Book here that tells the strangest story you ever heard. It’s about a boy that got all the money the old man could give him, and then run away.” Then he pictured to them the prodigal son as a youth from a respectable London family, throwing away his oppor tunities, leaving his home, spending his time in ginshops and gambling dens. When he had described the youth’s misery in words his hearers could well comprehend, and then had brought him, at last, peni tent, to his father’s arms, “ right on the doorstep of his home,” uncouth men and women sobbed aloud.—G. B. F. H allock . IV. F ather and S on In one of J. Wilbur Chapman’s meet ings, a man gave the following testimony: “I got off at the Pennsylvania Depot one day as a tramp, and for a year I begged on the streets for a living. One day I touched a man on the shoulder and said, ‘Mister, please give me a dime.’ As soon as I saw his face, I recognized my old father. ‘Father, don’t you know me?’ I asked. i “ Throwing his arms around me, he cried, ‘I have found y ou ; all I have is yours.’ “Men, think of it, that I, a tramp, stood begging my father for ten’ cents, when for eighteen years he had been looking for me, to give me all he was worth.” S elected . JANUARY 26, 1936 BASIC PRINCIPLES OF OUR CHURCH E ph esian s 2:19-22 Meditation on the Lesson Ephesians is the very book to answer the question, “What are the basic principles of our church?” In this little 'etter, Paul gives us in words o f exquisite fullness a revela tion concerning the church o f Jesus Christ —its origin, construction, and function. We find here unfolded the mysteries of that mystical church which Christ had promised His disciples that He would build. In the chapter in which today’s lesson appears, we have a portion dealing with the construction of the church. In verses 1-10, we have the materials—individuals given new life by grace; in verses 11-22, we have the building—all believers built on Christ, the Foundation and chief Corner Stone. What reason there is for the believer to exult as he contemplates the truth that he is no more a stranger or foreigner but a fellow citizen with the saints and of the household o f God (v. 19). Truly “our cit izenship is in heavfen” (Phil. 3:20, R. V .). It used to be said o f a Roman that where- ever he went and whatever he did, he was a Roman still. He could never be anything else. What a wonderful thing it would be if Christians might thus remember their citizenship! There is transforming power in the truth stated here: “Jesus Christ himself being

touches the real condition of the lost— away from God and home. In the second place, it reveals in a most convincing man ner the yearning heart of the Father. Here we find not only that God is eager to pardon, but also that He will bring the repentant soul into complete fellowship. The “ best robe,” the “ ring,” the “shoes,” the “ fatted calf,” and the rejoicing com pany all speak eloquently of full forgive ness. “This my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.” T o be “ found,” the sinner must say three things: “I will arise”—volition; “ I will . . . go to my father” — conversion (being turned around) ; and, “I w ill. . . say”—confession. The Father longs'To receive each “lost” one. Yam Sing was being examined for church membership in San Francisco, Calif. In reply to the question, “How did you find Jesus?” .he answered, “ I no find Jesus at all; He found me.”— P ickering . II. “ A bandoned ” In one of our galleries there is a picture of an old derelict vessel, an old battered hulk, on a rough sea with threatening clouds, and forked flashes of lightning shooting across it. It is a picture by Stan fields which he calls ‘‘Abandoned.” No canvas ever spoke its message with plainer voice. I might describe it. I might com ment on it. But down underneath the painting is a verse that tells the whole weird, pathetic story. Listen to the words: i (“‘Storm-beaten, torn and tossed By night and day; Lone, lorn, lamented, lost, Drifting away.” What a picture o f many a soul that you and I know! Helps for the Leader I.
