Money and health and worldl” prosperity He often wisely withholds from them. But He never fails to give them grace, peace, and glory. Christ declares that His people “ shall never perish.” . . . The enemies o f their souls may be strong and mighty, but their Saviour is mightier; and none shall pluck them out of their Sa viour’s hands. . . . He has said it, and He will make it good: “My sheep . . . shall never perish.”—J. C. R yle . JANUARY 27 Grace for the Lowly “ He giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, hut giveth grace unto the humble” (Jas. 4:6). It is the man who says, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son,” that receives the Father’s kiss of forgiveness and welcome, and restoration to all the privileges o f sonship. It is he who knows and believes that by nature he is, as regards the matters o f highest mo ment, a fool, that is made wise; it is he who acknowledges, himself utterly weak, that is “ strengthened with might by- his Spirit” ; it is he who sees and feels himself to be full of sin, that is “made the right eousness of God in him.” . . . Leighton says: “God pours out His grace plenti fully on humble hearts. His sweet dews and showers slide off the mountains, to fall on the low valleys of humble hearts, and make them pleasant and fertile.” — R . J ohnstone . We must have peace with God before we can enjoy the peace o f God; . . . Justifi cation, with its evidences, must be well ap prehended, before sanctification, with its fruits. . . . Ah, soul! thou hast experienced the former; dost thou know the latter ? Dost thou know what it is for Christ to enter info the closed doors o f the inner chamber of the heart, and say, “ Peace be unto you” ? . . . Oh, that you may now receive from Christ this blessed g ift! Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart. It is your high privilege.— F. B. M eyer . JANUARY 29 He Has Never Failed “He is faithful that promised" (Heb. 10:23). God’s servants have ever found Him faithful to His Word. “He cannot deny himself.” Enter, then, into covenant with God. Take Him as your Guide, and you, too, will one day be able to say: “He promised to keep me, and He has kept me. He said He would strengthen me in the hour o f trial, and He has strengthened me. He said He would be a Very present help in trouble, and in trouble He has been my help. He told me if I would acknowl edge Him in all my ways, He would direct my paths, and He has directed them. . . , Though heart and flesh should faint and fail me, the Lord will be the strength of my heart, and my portion forever.” WmSpThe Pathway of Promise.
