constituted the Jewish trial. Those which followed before Pilate were under the Roman law. This peculiar situation arose because of the generous policy of Rome in permitting conquered nations to maintain their laws and customs iq so far as they were compatible with Roman supremacy. 2. Concerning the Jewish trial, it may be said first that the whole procedure was absolutely illegal because the Sanhedrin under Roman law had no right to try a capital offense, which blasphemy was under Jewish law. Furthermore, the procedure was a violation even of Jewish law in sev eral respects. First, some of the judges had taken part in the arrest. Second, there was an illegal examination before the trial proper for the purpose of securing admis sions. Third, an attempt was made by the judges to secure the testimony of false wit nesses. Fourth, the trial was held at night. Fifth, the verdict of guilty was rendered at the close of the night session without allowing a day to intervene. Sixth, the morning session was held on a feast day. Seventh, the verdicts were given without legal evidence. 3. Concerning the Roman trial, it should be noted first that Pilate was the proper Roman official to try the charges brought against the Lord. Furthermore, he seems to have acted in a judicial manner when he refused to entertain a charge which dis closed no offense against Roman law, and when he disposed of the charge of treason brought against Christ. Pilate’s tragic mistake, which led to all of the others, was in not discharging the prisoner immediate ly, once he had pronounced Him to be without fault. “All the subsequent proceed ings were contrary to both the letter and the spirit of the law. Although Pilate took his place upon the judgment seat, his acts, properly speaking, were not those of a judge, and had no legal force or value; but were rather the futile attempts of a weak and vacillating politician to appease an angry mob thirsting for the blood of a countryman. The carrying out of a sen tence imposed in such circumstances, and under such conditions, may not inaptly be described as a judicial murder.” (For a remarkable discussion of the subject, see the article in the International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, from which the above ex cerpt is taken.) Golden Text Illustration 1 J ohn 3:16 A little maiden once came to Mark Guy Pearse in great distress because, as she said, she could not love Jesus Christ. She did want to love Him, but somehow she couldn’t. The genial minister said to her: “Well, my little woman, don’t keep think ing about your love to Jesus, but just keep on saying, ‘Jesus loves me.’ Say it to your self over and over again; and come to see me tomorrow.” The little girl did as she was told, and when she came to see Mr. Pearse the next day, there was no need to tell him of the change that had taken place. Her face was radiant. The love of God had been shed abroad in her heart by the Holy Spirit which had been given to her. —Sunday School Times.

how He prayed to the heavenly Father to keep them from harm and evil while He was gone. And now the time had come for Him to leave them. Lesson Story: This is the saddest and yet the most wonderful of all stories. The Lord Jesus knew all about the sad things that were going to happen to Him. He knew that one of His very own disciples would hand Him over to His enemies to be crucified. He knew that the Jews, who should have been the ones waiting to re ceive Him as the promised Gift of God, were His worst enemies and would not believe in Him. Jesus knew that when He would be taken prisoner, His disciples would run away in fear and leave Him, even Peter who had said so boldly, “ I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death” (Lk. 22:33). Jesus knew that He would be taken and put to death as though He were the worst of sinners. Yes, He knew all of these things, and, knowing them, He did not try in a single way to stop them. The Bible tells us why. Jesus was willing to suffer all these things be cause God had promised His people that they might come back into His presence through believing that Jesus Christ, the innocent Son of God, had died in their place.
