MARCH 21, 1937 LEARNING TO SAY “THY WILL BE DONE” M atthew 26:36-45; J ohn 6:38 Meditation on the Lesson From the Lord Jesus’ declaration in John 6 we learn the supreme purpose of His life upon this earth. In the words, “ For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me,” are com pressed the motive and fulfilled mission of the Son of God who suffered vicariously for the sins of the whole world. A submissive, obedient spirit is the essence of His state ment of purpose. He was truly and abso lutely atone with the eternal Father’s desire. This attitude was maintained throughout our Lord’s life. T o His disciples He said: “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:34). “ 1 can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me” (John 5:30). What utter selflessness! How abandoned He was to the will of Another! In the Epistle to the Hebrews there is reference to these words prophetic of Christ, written by David through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit: “ Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God” (Psa. 40:6-8; cf. Heb. 10:5-10). Perfect compliance with the wishes of His Father involved forsaking His glory in the pres ence of God, and enduring the unspeakable horror of separation on the cross. We can understand how it could be His delight, His “meat,” to do the will of His Father in performing miracles of helpfulness, such as raising the dead, healing the sick, and cur ing the blind. And we can understand also how it delighted Him to live the pure and spotless life, spreading blessing everywhere He went. But we cannot comprehend the sacred mysteries of the Garden of Gethsem- ane, where He prayed in agony that “ this cup” might pass away, and at the same time said: “ Nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt” (Matt. 26:39). Here is the climax of a life completely surrendered to the Father. Jesus’ statement, “ 1 do always those things that please him,” included even the dark and painful trial of Gethsemane and Calvary. Our Lord had prayed in His great High Priestly prayer in John 17: “ Father, I will that they aiso, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am.” Then He, willingly made a Lamb for the slaughter, offered Himself on the altar that that prayer might be an swered. Because He prayed “ not my will, but thine be done,” our great High Priest now has power to make intercession for us at the Father’s right hand. How much our Saviour has wrought for us! In view of His willingness, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus”—a mind determined to do the will of God. “T o do Thy will, ygs, that is all; T o hear Thy voice, obey Thy call; T o follow, Lord, where Thou dost lead, T o do Thy will, is all I need.”

Charles Reade says that on a blank leaf of his grandmother’s Bible was drawn a circle with several radii converging in the center, which was named Christ. On the radii were written the names of different denominations of Christians. Underneath the circle were written the words, “The nearer to the center, the nearer to one an other.”— Christian Herald. II. E quality It is related that once when the Duke of Wellington remained to take the sacrament at his parish church, a very poor old man went up the opposite aisle, and reaching the communion table, knelt down close by the side of the duke. Some one touched the poor man on the shoulder and whispered to him to move farther away or to rise and wait until the duke had received the bread and wine. But the eagle eye and the quick ear of the great commander caught the meaning of that touch and that whisper. He clasped the old man’s hand and held him to prevent his rising, and in a rever ential undertone, but most distinctly, said, “ Do not move; all are equal here.” — The Biblical Museum.
