in the dust underneath the onward-march ing feet of the victorious hosts of the Anti christ. Most of the other European powers are hastening into the embrace—and the bondage—of dictators, ten of whom will finally “give their power and strength unto the beast” (Rev. 17:12,13), thus enthron ing him in “ power. . . . over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations” ; (Rev. 13:7). And these powers are being ridden by “the woman . . . arrayed in purple and scarlet, color” (Rev. 17:4). Ecclesiastical Rome fits the picture drawn by the Holy Spirit in Revelation 17. In this discussion we are considering the mighty hierarchy, the organization, rather than individual followers of the Roman Catholic faith. When the church joined herself to the State in the days of Constan tine, and continued for centuries and even unto this day to form unholy alliances with “the kings of the earth” (Rev. 17:2), she “committed fornication” and became “the great whore that sitteth upon many waters” (Rev. 17:1). And “ the waters . . . where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multi tudes, and nations, and tongues” (Rev. 17:15). From the days of Constantine, ecclesiastical Rome has been swaying the unregenerate kings of the earth as no other outside power has ever done. For centuries, no king in Europe could be crowned with out the consent of papal Rome. In one way or another, this “ scarlet woman” will con tinue to lord it over the dominating politi cal powers of Europe until the Anfichrist comes to the zenith of his power. She will ride “ the beast”—even the Antichrist him self—as he comes strutting onto the stage for his last activities, fulfilling the Word of God to the letter. It is only when an alliance of the ten kings shall enthrone him as their sovereign head that the great “man of sin” (2 Thess. 2:3), weary of her dicta torial control, “ shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire” (Rev. 17:16). Mark it carefully: The har lot (ecclesiastical Rome) shall ride astride “the beast” (the Antichrist) when “the beast” comes upon the scene to fulfill all the Word of God. W e need to bear in mind that if the com ing of Christ for His church is an event to be expected now at any moment, then it is only reasonable to assume that that “man” who is to be the Antichrist is now present somewhere in the world, for immediately after the translation of the church he begins his activities. Now, where may he be? And who may he be? With all due respect to other opinions, we still believe “ the beast” will begin his work from Rome. And while no man can posi tively identify the Antichrist before his rev elation (which will be after the transla tion of the church, as we conclude from (2 Thessalonians 2:7-9), yet we hazard the opinion that, should the translation of the church now take place, Mussolini would be the outstanding candidate for Satan’s last big job. Reasons for this opinion we have in abundance, but they cannot be stated here. That a vast majority of the world else where is rushing, body and soul, pell-mell into the spike-decorated arms of absolute dictators, is acknowledged by all. But that the heirs of the achievements of Washing ton, Jefferson, and Lincoln, beneath the red,' white, and blue folds of “ Old Glory,” should stampede in that direction so enthu siastically as they did last November, is portentous to the last degree. All the more portentous is this stampede when we see many of the professed saints deceived, caught therein, However, if the day is at hand for the reign of the Antichrist— ‘‘the king [that] shall do according to his will” (Dan. 11:36) —then we can understand this blindness on the part of a people who still believe that they themselves, at least, are free. The Almighty has spoken. “ The Scripture can not be broken” (John 10:35). That a whole Christ-rejecting world shall give itself utterly into the hands of the per sonal representative of Satan himself, even the Antichrist, for “ Governmental direc tion” in the final hour of our age “is as inevitable as that the sun will rise tomor row.” And America, with all her boasted freedom, finds herself already “ keyed to the temper and yearnings of the world as it is today” for the coming of a leader after the world’s own unregenerate heart, “ to take direction.” Verily, the hands of the clock move near to the midnight stroke of twelve! “ T h e H arlot ” R ides “ T he B east ” All the more ominous is this trend to ward national and world dictatorship, in that it is dominated and blessed by a mighty ecclesiastical spirit, dwelling nigh to Cae sar’s palace. There is one outstanding excep tion. Utter godlessness impregnates the heart of the Russian government. But the Rus sian Bear—the godless “ Gog” of E zek iel- mighty as he is, is doomed to be trampled
